Better "computer" place (nautilus)

When clicking on the "computer" place in nautilus (Poste de travail in french)
We actually see a mess of icons, not at all ordered.
It would be GREAT to have subdivisions like "Hard Drives", "CD/DVD Drives" "Removable Devices" (or "external storage devices" or so) and "Network Places" or even more, and this with useful details
-For the hard drives and external storage devices: the filesystem of the different partitions that are displayed and a disk usage bar showing used and free space below the icon, possibility of setting the label of the partition by renaming the icon, etc.
-For cd/dvd drives, it could show if the tray is empty or not, if the disk is blank or used, with or without multisession, etc.
-For network places, maybe it could show samba shares on other computers or workgroups, and provide a tool for easily mounting shared folders with smbfs or so

I recently switched to linux mint, I must say it is very nice and based on gutsy 7.10.
They use the red hat liberation fonts by default and OMG It looks amazing.
The default ubuntu fonts are painful to look at once you know how good it can look.

When you are activating a compiz effect, you actually don't know what will you get. So these effects (and perhaps tips for using them) can be previewed in a short flash movie so you will know what you are doing. Google Sketch Up already has something like this.

synaptic - add an option to show only applications, without libraries

when browsing the repositories using synaptic, the libraries, doxumentations, localization packages, etc. are adding a lot of visual clutter, and makes browsing the catalog much more difficult.
please add an option to hide libraries/ localizations, etc. and show only applications.
add/remove programs does not have all the application in the repositories listed, therefore it is not a solution.

Hide mouse cursor *before* fading to screensaver

This might seem like something trivial, but it has a negative effect on the otherwise smooth transition from desktop to screensaver.
At present, the desktop fades to black, then the screensaver comes on. But during that fade, the mouse cursor is still visible onscreen -- creating a white distraction as the screen is fading.
It shouldn't be difficult to hide the cursor at the beginning of the fade, therefore giving the impression that the desktop is very smoothly transitioning to the screensaver.
I know it's small, but little things like this will give Ubuntu the kind of polish which add to the feeling of aesthetic completeness it should have to match the brilliance of the underlying system.

I think that it should be possible to connect to the repository and check if there are any updates available without having to enter a password.
The password should only be needed for installing the updates, not for checking for updates.

I dont think Ekiga is used by many people, perhaps we should consider removing it from the cd in favour for other software or more drivers?
I made up a quickvote at the ubuntuforums to see if I was the only one not using Ekiga.
Check the thread posted here for information and discussion.

Very few people use ekiga smartphone and removing
would free up space for more stuff like compiz
config settings manager. Some people see the compiz
videos on youtube and shouldn't have to download
an app to enable them.

During copy, Nautilus should check files name before complaining about space

I've got a 1 Gb USB storage with an 800 Mb file on it.
When I want to copy an updated version of this file (same name), Nautilus warn me that the operation can't be done cause there is not enought space on the disk.
So I have to manualy erase the old file, empty the trashcan, and finaly copy the new file.
Therefore I suggest that Nautilus check files name when coping or moving operations BEFORE complaining about having not enought space left. (and then simply ask if we want to replace/rename/cancel)

alacarte improvements - need a better menu editor

The gnome menu editor 'alacarte' is, put simply, garbage. Everything about it is annoying:
* When you drag an icon to a new category, you are switched to the new category (annoying as designed)
* You can select and attempt to drag and drop multiple icons at once, but it doesn't work (maybe a bug)
* drag and drop frequently just fails for no apparent reason (ok this one is a bug)
* There's no "sort" function, and any menu that's been edited (aside from show/hide certain icons) will no longer autosort, so you have to manually sort any menu you've edited substantially (e.g. with subfolders) (stupid as designed)
* When you bring up launcher properties the alacarte window is too serious about retaining focus and the launcher properties window typically appears under the alacarte window (should probably be a bug too)
Alacarte needs to be heavily reworked. It would be nice to just be able to drag and drop in nautilus somehow, but there's so many different kinds of menu that may be unworkable.

Make xorg 7.4 Available for optional installation in Hardy

DRI is supposed to be supported for my radeon x700 but it's broken in xorg 7.3 with the available DRM/DRI modules.
“ATI RADEON X550/X700 Series “, RV410, 5657
“ATI RADEON X550/X700 Series Secondary “, RV410, 5677
I tried xorg 7.4 in a live CD environment and was able to get DRI working right away. There are probably other people with these issues who are wondering why DRI isn't working on chipsets that are supposed to be supported. Interestingly, xorg 7.3 also does not detect my widescreen display and displayconfig-gtk has been removed from the menus.
Providing some .deb packages for xorg 7.4 (even in an out-of-the-way repository that has to be manually disabled) that will work with ubuntu-desktop would be very useful for people like me.

Gimp needs a glossy touch

well so many of people suggested about gimp not use 3 windows.actually i and many i suppose(noobs) get scared when they see 3 windows all around desktop when they open Gimp(although there is a non official port called gimpshop but its outdated and not as good as gimp).
PS(photoshop) is setting web standards great piece of work but gimp too can compete with it.some needed changes:
*****single window.
****compatibility with photoshop filters .8bf filters, more support
****better documentation
**better icons and UI redesign(although i just saw feature planned for gimp next version 2.6) still deserves attention of developers.
**better support for pre defined key in photoshop also can be used in gimp
key combinations(keyboard shortcuts like ctrl+alt etc)
i am huge fan of photo editing software and web design somehow...usability in some software breaks barriers of commercial and free software.

After installing the system there is no easy way how the user can manage the disk partitions and the mount directories. Partition editing is included in the LiveCD but not in the base installation?! It must be fixed.

The Categories in many cases have double senses. One idea has parts of 2 categories.
ATM tags are included in brainstorm - VERY good.
But I vote to replace categories completely with tags - it is redundant information.

If Nautilus' bookmarks are going to be listed in the Places Menu, the ability to edit them should also be available in the Places Menu. Otherwise, users may have a hell of a time discovering how to do just that.

I would love to open more than one instance of totem to reproduce different videos at the same time, this is present in VLC and MPLAYER why can't totem have multiple instance if it is the main multimedia player in Ubuntu.
