Ubuntu needs to go green. Powertop, Lesswatts and other tools have finally hit the Linux scene to pave the way for better power management. It needs to be said, "if you want your battery to last longest, or have your energy bill be the lowest, you better use Ubuntu Linux."

Since I don't think many people would be scared of an extra button to configure their selected screensaver, it would be really nice if it could be included (like it is in xscreensaver-settings).

Most business laptops and some of the end user ones too now include a fingerprint reader.
Those are perfectly possible to use on Linux either by using thinkfinger (IBM/Lenovo) or fprint (HP).
The various PAM modules for those should be installed by default or at least be easily installable and integrate correctly in the default desktop.
GDM, gksudo and the gnome screensaver would have to be modified in order to correctly support fingerprint readers.
That way the user would be able to login either by entering is password as usual or using his fingerprint.

New users coming from Windows are often disoriented and don't really know the real advantages of Ubuntu or even how to use some of its basic functions (Add/Remove instead of setup.exe). An orientation would help them.
A couple of ideas for how to help them have come up, including an idea about having pop-ups for every new application that's open. The pop-up idea has a few downsides, of course, not the least of which being that pop-ups are annoying to many users, both new and experienced.
One relatively unobtrusive way to introduce new users to the basic functions of Ubuntu is to show a slideshow during the installation process. New users would probably watch the slideshow (they're waiting for the installation to finish--what else are they going to do?), while experienced users might have the option to turn off the slideshow... or they may just get up and leave, knowing that the installation won't take more than fifteen minutes.
Developer comments
A slideshow during the installer was planned for 8.10, but has been deferred to 9.04.

When I start the Ubuntu LiveCD and my keyboard or mouse isn't detected that is very annoying. We cannot expect people to know shortcut keys to start a mouse, or how to turn the on-screen keyboard on.
No Keyboard, but mouse: start on-screen keyboard
No Mouse, but keyboard: enable numlock keys as mouse, alert user of how to turn on and off
If both are not detected we don't have any good options but we can still tell them that we haven't detected a keyboard or mouse.

Now i don't see any informations when my archive has ben extracted.
From #5352 (merged):
When you are extracting an archive in File Roller you get a progress bar with a little box that moves to the left and to the write. The problem is that this gives no indication of how long the file will take to uncompress. I know that in Windows there is a progress bar the moves depending on how much of the file has been uncompressed. You can also check this manually by comparing the size of the uncompressing file to the total size that it should be once completed.

So I right-clicked on a file and selected "Cut" in the context menu.
So that I later could "Paste" the file into another directory.
Make so that when you select "Cut" on a file, the icon becomes dimmed.
Because right now, there are no visual indication, so you don't know it worked.
In Windows there is a visual notification by the icon becoming dimmed.
In Ubuntu there is no visual notification, the icon does not become dimmed. This is confusing.

In many cases, I can't configure my webcam or I have problems with the microphone. Now I can use my webcam but only with V4L2 and only 3 programas detect my webcam. It's a good idea can use my webcam in all programs as camorama.
Developer comments
That's pure driver issue in the first place. A big plus is to recommend UVC-based webcams to users, since it takes a lot of work off the shoulders of driver-developers. On the
integration-side proper support for v4l/v4l2 in webcam-related applications needs to be solidified. The ideal application to polish up is cheese of course.

Our easiest chess mode is too difficult. I can beat it some times, but it requires a lot of difficulty.
This is too hard - we need a "very easy" chess mode that a complete chess beginner, or even a 10 year old, could conceivably beat.

Hi!
I'm a big fan of Images like .iso.
But it is not very easy to mount this Images.
I think there must be a Tool in Nautilus and Dolphin wich alows mounting Images with a double Click. (This feature exists int MacOS). Or with a right click on the file and then there must be a poit "Mount Image". I thick that would be a very use full Tool for every one.
A good example for this is CDemu.
I know there are some ohter good programs, but I think that would be the easyest way and very confortible.

Pleeeeeease make an Ubuntu Media Center. I'd love to move my server over to Ubuntu but there are no good Media Center for it, so I'm stuck on Windows. :(
Audio/Video/Pictures support would be the bare minimum needed, but TV Tuner support/Web Browser/RSS Reader/whatever else you guys want would be excellent as well.
I know theres already an Ubuntu MC project (which is dead I think?), but it was going off in more of a FrontRow direction, where as I was kinda hoping Ubuntu could implement a proper MC like MCE or MediaPortal.

Improve integration with LinuxBios/OpenBios
|
|
Written by Auzy the 6 Mar 08 at 08:08. Category: Hardware support.
Related to: Nothing/Others.
New
|
|
We should investigate ways to use LinuxBios/Openbios enabled hardware to provide a better user experience. Possibly even set up a team to meet with them and discuss.
Some ways it may help is:
- Shave time off bootup
- The ability to support ACPI maybe on hardware not supporting it correctly now
- Being able to support buggy hardware better
- New ways of booting the computer we never were able to do before (ie, boot straight into a media centre instantly)
If we push as ubuntu enabled computers, we could also try to get them to employ LinuxBios/Openbios so that more of the computer is open, and we can do a lot more with the hardware, instead of relying on firmware updates (that sometimes can only be applied in windows).
OpenBios also may benefit some motherboard manufacturers because they no longer need to pay money for the more commonly used bios.
We should try to 'become one with the hardware'. This lets us do this. And it doesn't hurt to take 2 or 3 hours out of some developers time to work on something that may make booting more configureless, the computer more stable, more features, and provide a means of booting quicker.

Unite all Ubuntu community in a single social network

Well, that's a pretty common idea in terms of all that Web 2.0 thing, but I'll dare to offer it.
At the moment there are lots of different services in Ubuntu: wiki, ubuntuforums, irc server, launchpad, rosetta translation, personal repository and even more.
So, why not unite all these under a single brand and integrate it deeper? Make a kind of social network in a common sense as a basement and settle all the other services atop. Or simply rebrand and extend Launchpad. I think, there would be no harm if such a network would be a place for conversations on different topics, not only Linux itself (although within some limits). But anyways, a more clear integration would make all these tools even more useable, if there was a single page one could start with and access all the services easily.
And again, all this could show the concept of a community more clearly to non-programmers. Nearly any active Internet user (although somehow experienced computer user - not necessarily an experienced Linux user) could contribute.
Apart from it, some other services might be added.
1) a simple pastebin-like stuff and a personal repository for configs - like dotfiles.org. Just more useable.
2) a simple blogging system (not only Planet)
3) some centralized personal messages system. Another thing is to set an ubuntu's own jabber server - probably without any gates to other protocols (like ICQ, MSN), but that would provide people with an easier option than IRC and a reliable Jabber server, too)
4) some common things from social networks. Of course, there is no need in another Facebook, but the Web 2.0 concept can be greatly attuned to Open Source ideology, so one can use some of its strong tools.
Well, there are many other possible developments for these idea. What do you think?

Improve the interface for Time Vault

First off, I know that we arent Apple. It is not good to have a wicked GUI for a useless program. But, the GUI does a lot for the user. I think that the interface of Time Vault looks a little complex- and if it were to resemble Time Machine (OS X) it would be much more intuitive and easy to use. I was at the store today and could go onto Time Machine and use it- just because it was so simple. The interface wowed me and I just felt I could connect to it. That I feel is very important. I'm not just saying to make the timevault interface look 3d for the sake of pretty, but because it would help people to effectively use Ubuntu, what we aim for all along.

The Avant-Window-Manager is now on the repositories, but it's extras applets are not. AWN is not too much useful without them.
to use them we must download the sources and compile.
