Advanced Virtual Whiteboard Via Projector
Written by Sauliusonis the 21 Dec 10 at 05:49. New
Advanced Virtual Whiteboard Via Projector(AVWVP)

This is the perfect solution to increase the speed of:

Files haring
Web address sharing
Delivery of short memo's

the idea is, that the team of people works on same project, at the same time. On the wall of room, there is a AVWVP, where shared information appears.

The AVWVP works very similar to second monitor, but it can be shared and used by multiple users at the same time. Users can drag-and-drop files, windows(opened files), put notes or put opened web pages on the area of AVWVP.

For me, as regular user its very hard to explain everything in computer terms, so I tried to explain my idea trough image:

make the desktop wallpaper editable
Written by chenshangsong the 15 Dec 10 at 15:22. New
every time I staring at desktop wallpaper, I want to hold on (for example, the "super" windows key), then click on somewhere, then type something and it embedded into the wallpaper.
I can change the text later by hold the super key and click on the text. or add another text by holding the super key and click on somewhere else.

it's not like tomboy or screenlets notes which just put notes window with a frame border on the desktop, not on the wallpaper. It would be better if the text just embedded into the wallpaper like I edit the picture in f-spot and re-set it as background.

Solution #1: turn the desktop into a picture editor while a special key worked as switch
Written by chenshangsong the 15 Dec 10 at 15:22.
whenever on the desktop and the windows super key (or some other key, it's configurable) is hold, the desktop turn out to be a picture editor, we can add text or even picture on it, or even draw lines, shapes on the wallpaper, and it stays there just as the text or picture were added into the background picture, but changeable on my wish.

Solution #2: Show wallpaper file location in the wallpaper selection window
Written by alwuzomondo the 17 Dec 10 at 08:41.
It is not a good idea to have a picture editor as wallpaper, but if you would want to edit the wall paper it is not very straight forward to find the file so you can easily edit it. Therefore in the wallpaper selection window you should not only see the installed wallpaper, but also the file location. This way it will be easy to find and edit the wallpaper, without having a program as background.

Bigger drop shadow for focused windows Compiz.
Written by xkvriet the 21 Oct 10 at 22:51. New
Let focused windows cast a slightly bigger drop shadow on the desktop. Metacity has this, and it just looks really good. Plus, it's easier to see which window is focused.

Solution #1: Let Compiz draw bigger drop shadows for focused windows.
Written by xkvriet the 21 Oct 10 at 22:51.
In Metacity, it looks like this:

Focused window: http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee38/Wii-Mii/focused.png

Unfocused window: http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee38/Wii-Mii/unfocused.png

If Metacity can do something like this, then it should be absolutely no problem for Compiz to do this as well.

You can't use hot corners to pick a specific window when chosing work spaces
Written by Blinky the 21 Oct 10 at 11:26. New
I have hot corner enabled using compiz. When I pick a work space, I go to the top left corner. When I choose a window for a given workspace, i move the mouse to the to top right.

At the moment I can move the mouse to the top left to see all work spaces and then move the mouse to the top right to see all the windows in those work spaces. It would be great to be able to do this.

I know that I could use the window picker to see "all windows" but this is more a usability thing as my workspaces give each window a form of context, which makes them easier to see when its a crowded space. I.e I have 4 work spaces - top left is mail, bottom left is my browser etc.

Real-time earth wallpaper
Written by radiac93 the 19 Sep 10 at 18:58. New
I've been googeling all day for this, but I can't find what I'm looking for..

So what am I looking for?
A real-time earth wallpaper, so a app/program/... that changes your background in real-time: if it's night you see a dark earth with the lights of the cities, if it's day it's clear, etc.

I've found quit a few scripts to do this with images, but that's like 5 images that repeat themselves over a 24h span.
I'm looking for something that shows snow when there should be/is snow in the winter, something that you wan hardly see the transition between night and day because it's so detailed..

I know this is possible because it already exists for windows--"
I'm still a new user(for one week) but I haven't used my windows since then(and I'm trying to keep at it!).

So if anyone could please help me with this.. :)

"So the pointer is at or near the center of the image." (Universal Access)
Written by Grayson Peddie the 5 Sep 10 at 05:17. New
If anyone uses a Mac or if anyone does not have a Mac, have a look at this:

http://www.psbnet.ca/eng/accessibility/magnify_screen.html

If you enable the zoom option and click in Options, I want you to have a look at "When zoomed in, the screen image moves." There are three options when you zoom in when using a Mac. The first is "Continuously with pointer," which is what Compiz does when using Enhanced Desktop Zoom. One problem I have is with when I enable the option in Compiz to move the screen image when I move the mouse is it feels unnatural when I need to get to the edge of the screen. Actually, the position of the screen image seems to be proportional to the position of the mouse pointer, which is what I don't like. The second option is "Only when the pointer reaches an edge." Fine and dandy, but I don't like the behavior. The last option is "So the pointer is at or near the center of the image." This is ahat I want. I use this when I am using a Mac when taking a graphic design course at Tallahassee Community College.

Right now, I cannot afford a Mac, and even if I buy a Mac Mini and connect that to my monitor when I get my financial aid check, I'd rather use my money to pay off my credit card, so right now and while I'm still in college right now, Mac Mini is considered a luxury to me, so since I currently have my netbook with Ubuntu in it, so I'd like to have the ability to use Enhanced Desktop Zoom but with the option to keep the zoomed area centered within or near the mouse pointer (by "near," I'm talking about when the zoomed area hits the edge of the screen).

Also, since this is not related to Compiz and method of moving the zoomed area wheile staying at or near the mouse pointer, I'd like to see a new "Universal Access" that integrates Orca and Enhanced Desktop Zoom into one location.

With Compiz Advanced Settings (CCSM), it can be cumbersome for the visually impaired to work with controls next to far-away labels when changing setings for Enhanced Desktop Zoom. Instead of placing a checkbox to the far right of the label, the checkbox should be placed to the left in order to make quick selections while zoomed in.

Solution #1: Adopt to what Apple has designed.
Written by Grayson Peddie the 5 Sep 10 at 05:17.
Even though I did not mention Orca in my idea rationale, I'd propose a solution to make those accessibility options easily accessible for the visually impaired. If anyone has a Mac, have a look at what Apple has put into Universal Access and adopt it from there. Sure, it does not have to look and feel like Apple OS X's Universal Access, but I'd like to see makers of Ubuntu combine and integrate some of the features from Orca and Enhanced Desktop Zoom into one location. Multiple tabs won't hurt, though, as long as the properties dialog are not filled with tabs ("Seeing," "Hearing," "Keyboard," "Mouse and Trackpad" is a good start).

Plus, once you include an option that I proposed above, Ubuntu will make it easy for me to navigate naturally around the screen. Right now, like I mentioned in my idea rationale, contonuously moving the screen image in propertion with the position of the mouse just feels unnatural to me.

One more thing, it helps to condense all the controls and make sure it is layed out clean.

Simple automatic tiling needed in Compiz
Written by cajhne the 3 Aug 10 at 08:25. New
Grid doesn't do it for me; I don't want to have to set up a tiling scheme, I want to hit a short-cut key combo, have my open windows all fit, and still be viewable/usable at normal capacity, side-by-side. Hit it again to return to normal.

Solution #1: Add "Tile" plugin to the supported repositories for compiz for automatic tiling
Written by cajhne the 3 Aug 10 at 08:25.
A solution exists, but it's a nightmare to get/install. Let's add it back to the officially supported Compiz plugins. It's one of the most useful things about Compiz! It's so good/handy, Windows 7 copied it, and used it in their interface as one of their main selling points. Can we get it back, please? :)

Here's a demo of what it does (skip to 1:42 to see the "tile" functionality):

Multiple viewports on the same cube (Multiple Monitors)
Written by Reason NL the 28 Jul 10 at 12:44. New
After a couple of weeks playing and struggling with compiz-fusion and beryl I was missing a fairly straightforward multi monitor option for the desktop cube.

Solution #1: Multiple viewports on the same cube (Multiple Monitors)
Written by Reason NL the 28 Jul 10 at 12:44.
I think it would be great to have the ability to have one cube with multiple views on different monitors.
To clarify this a little. I want to be able to have for example an 8 side desktop cube and the ability to rotate this cube on each monitor individually. This way I would be able to show all the desktops on all monitors and it would even mean that I would be able to clone the desktop on all monitors by rotating to the same desktop (For presentations with a beamer as another viewport for example).
The cube will be the same as on a single monitor pc and the second or third monitor will just add another viewport to the same cube.
Dragging windows between monitors will move the window to the view which will be active on the specific screen your are dragging too, except when it’s the same desktop or when the end of all viewports is reached. In this case the cube will have to rotate the same way as it does right now.
I think this would really enhance the use of multiple desktops on multi monitors and would make life using compiz-fusion it bit easier, more enjoyable and will add much more value in using more monitors in a multiple desktop environment.

Check http://forum.compiz.org/viewtopic.php?f=136&t=4393 for more information.

Cool 3D desktop effect!
Written by valpskott the 1 Jul 10 at 21:16. New
This is not a problem, rather it is a feature request. But if you must have it formulated as a problem then OK.

When I look at the desktop, all the Windows are fixed to the flat 2D surface that my computer screen really is, there is nothing(besides the 3D Cube and other Compiz effects) that makes the desktop contents stand out from the two dimensions.

Solution #1: Face Recognition
Written by valpskott the 1 Jul 10 at 21:16.
The solution is software that uses the webcam to recognise the users face, then moving the Desktop Windows when the user moves his face.

Like, if the user moves his head to the left, all the windows moves to the right. The windows that are in the front should move more than the ones in the back, creating the illusion of depth of field.

I bet most people who have played First Person Shooters have tried to do this when wanting to look around a corner or over an obstacle, it's like a natural reflex and would be a cool feature in a desktop environment.
