I have seen several submissions here about improving Ubuntu's look and feel/better wallpapers/remove the old and lame screensavers, etc. etc., and I agree that all of the above ought to be done. Eyecandy improves the appeal of the OS -> Increased Appeal = Increased Adoption.
A while ago, while looking through my long list of boring screensavers, I thought "some of the iTunes Visualizers would make great screensavers..." Perhaps the screensaver could even play tracks from your fave playlist (after all, it would need some audio input to make it dance). Also, I just had a look at a few 3D Desktop demos using Compiz (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxfSwzhSn1c&feature=related ). So how about 3D visualizer-screensavers. Start with something like 3D versions of Euphoria or Skyrocket (imagine flying through a Google-Earth cityscape with fireworks exploding in sync with your tunes) or...
There are a lot of useful compiz plugins, but many of them don't let the mouse works like use to do in a maximized window. I would like to close or to push a application button while I have a window with the expo effect (scaled, freewins or shelf) using.
I recently gave an Ubuntu Live CD to a Windows user who has never used Linux. And after a month when I happened to meet him again, I found that he wasn't using most of the COMPIZ FUSION plugins, the reason is that he wasn't even aware of it and was amazed when I showed him the simple rotating cube plugin.
This just shows that if you want new users trying out Ubuntu, you have to educate them on what exactly they can get from it. Maybe a video tour on the first installation will be more useful, or some other form of media.
