Written by borsook the 25 Dec 08 at 23:47. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
If I install package A system will propose installing packages B,C,D that A depends upon. But if I uninstall A B,C,D will be left even if nothing else uses them. Of course this can be checked and done manually, but wouldn't it be better if Synaptic checked if anything else depends upon those packages and ask the user if he/she wants to uinstall them too?

If you check the sound options there are to many options to chose, this has to be a expert modus.
It would be nice if you go to the sound options that you see a nice Pulse Audio mixer and have a tab with options for the system sounds.
Now is everything to complex and the soundsystem doesn't work for everybody (see bugs on launchpad).
The sound system on Ubuntu is to buggy at the moment so it need improvements.

Don't add hidden sodding trash folder for usb drives.
Written by arckeda the 22 Dec 08 at 19:26. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
God damn this is annoying. :P

When I delete files off a flash drive, I have to hit ctrl+h, to see the hidden .Trash folder that shows up. Yes, it's good to have a trash bin for your desktop, but not a bloody flash drive!

Give us an option for disabling trash in removable media / certain partitions!

Make use of multiple CPUs and cores
Written by Bromskloss the 31 Dec 08 at 01:01. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
CPUs these days often have more than one core. Still, we are typically utilizing only one because the application using a lot of processing power is singlethreaded. I suggest Ubuntu encourages multithreading in applications (where the task at hand is parallelizable, of course).

These are a few examples of where I think it would be particularly useful:
- firefox, especially with flash on several pages at once
- video decoding
- image processing (including eog as well as gimp)

Thumbnail Maintenance
Written by ezekiel_000 the 22 Dec 08 at 13:21. Category: System. Related to: Gnome. New
Gnome needs a thumbnail clean-up tool or process similar to the Thumbnail Maintenance tool in Comix 4.0.1 to remove all thumbnail files for files that no longer exist or have moved.

After 2 years of using Ubuntu I was able to free up ~500mb of space in removing old thumbnails from ~600Mb down to less than 100Mb.

This could be a tool or an automatic process triggered by file operations.

Change the Update Manger so you can read package descriptions whilest updating
Written by charliem the 20 Dec 08 at 17:15. Category: System. Related to: Update manager. New
The Update Manger works really well but I think the GUI could do with a redesign. I think its fair to say the vast majority of users see an update is available and just hit install.

However once the update has started downloading, I often find my self wondering about the details of what I have just started installing. Especially if I see they are security updates as I wonder if my system has been exposed to the vulnerability.

What would be really good is if the update descriptions were available once the install has started. This would mean making the download dialogue non modal or possibly integrating it in to the main Update Manager window.

Intelligent "Open with..." menu
Written by cenora the 15 Dec 08 at 23:41. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ok, so if you install an audio player (like Songbird), right-click an audio file (say mp3), then that player should be on the "open with..." list!

Right now, I have several audio programs installed, but not all players are on the list.

This is valid FOR ANY TYPE OF FILE, be that an image editor, CD burner, or office document.

Better Kernel Panic Response/Handling
Written by coder543 the 2 Jan 09 at 21:52. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
On Mac OS X if there is a kernel panic, the GUI is ignored and white over black text is strewn across the screen describing what has happened and what caused it. Then the system freezes. On Ubuntu... it freezes, and you have no clue on the planet as to why. That, is bad. This would be oh so simple to do. Please, do it! This would definitely help everyone who has a kernel panic. Another possibility would be to kill all the user-apps that are running, then show a dialog box displaying what has happened. The dialog box would have one button: restart. This way they could read it, then move on just like they would have to anyways.

Carry my complete system with me (total backup tool)
Written by diegoj the 1 Jan 09 at 01:01. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Goal: make easier moving Ubuntu installation between computers.

There would be very interesting to have a tool that allow copy all the system to a external drive and late, allow to install it in other computer.

That is: a total *backup* tool, that would copy not only the files, also the configuration, installed programs and hidden folders, to *restore* the installation in other computer with Ubuntu.

For example (real experience):
My laptop is dying. Yes, its battery works very bad, the fan makes many noise... I think that some near day I buy another one. But installing Ubuntu, configurating, and copying my files can be very very tedious.
If I had a tool that make a perfect copy of my instalation and could run it as a Ubuntu live CD, alowing me to install it in a new computer would be marvelous.

I haven't seen this feature in Windows or MacOS. And it could be very useful for laptop users, because they could change their laptops more frequently than PC's users.

Easy "deb:" links to add software repos.
Written by Feba the 1 Jan 09 at 15:44. Category: System. Related to: Add/Remove program dialog. New
There are already links for e-mail applications, in the form of 'mailto:'. There are also already links for specific applications, such as "aim:" and "irc:". Basically, the idea would be to make it easier than ever to add new repos, through *EDIT* expanding the "apt:" link, which would appropriately link to the Software Sources manager Ubuntu has, or some similar application. In this way, a user could click an "Add Project Repo" link, instead of having to navigate GUIs or commands like the current system, and without the site trying to automatically install any software on their system just to add the repo.

Adding repos is a fairly laborious task at best now, given that the user has to copy/paste links into a location, update, and so on. This would save the user at least five clicks; opening the menu, scrolling to the application, clicking 'add', copy/pasting, and so on. It would also be quicker and easier than even the command line alternative.

There are many uses even a non-tech oriented user may have for adding other repos; such as getting newer versions of wine. Additional language support guides, at least Japanese, require adding another repo. An easy to add repo like this could encourage companies without debian/linux repos to create them, or companies which do have them (Such as Google http://www.google.com/linuxrepositories/apt.html ) to make such a 'one click install' the main way of installing their software, instead of hiding their repos away, requiring users to manually download updates and related software.

the login GUI (GDM) must use same resolution as X (Desktop screen resolution). Why different resolutions?

add a check box that reads: "Match Login Screen (GDM) and Desktop Screen Resolution" at "Monitor Resolution Setting"

check the bug report.

There are a number of possible improvements that could be made to speed up the installation of new applications, for example:

1) Allow packages to be downloaded in parallel to prevent slow repositories from slowing the overall download process. See wish list bug: 313685

2) Allow installation of packages in parallel with downloading (where possible). See wish list bug: 313680

Enforce UTF-8 in filesystem
Written by Rhamphoryncus the 12 Dec 08 at 06:59. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
As UTF-8 has become dominant it'd be nice to have the option of enforcing it in the filesystem — only for new installs of course.

This would ensure that garbage filenames are stopped at their source, rather than causing decoding errors in all the downstream applications.

I believe this would need to be a kernel patch, controlled through /etc/fstab.

gparted should merge functionality from partimage.
Written by annex666 the 5 Jan 09 at 22:50. Category: System. Related to: Live CD. New
gparted is a good graphical tool that allows the user to create/delete/modify/move partitions easily. partimage is a tool that allows users to backup and restore partitions to/from compressed image files.

To me it makes sense to merge the functionality of partimage into gparted to create one unified tool for management of partitions.

This enhanced gparted would add valuable functionality to the LiveCD - the ability to backup a known good installation before "nuking" it.

Use-case:

Joe Schmoe buys a laptop from large retailer PCs-R-Us. The laptop comes pre-configured with Windows, however an install CD is not provided - instead an installer is provided on a hidden partition. Joe wants to install his favourite Linux distribution, but first wants to backup an image of his hard drive, just in case he should need to restore it later.

Joe could use the enhanced gparted tool on the Ubuntu LiveCD to make a backup image of his system (saving this image to a DVD or external drive), then nuke the drive ready for the Ubuntu install.

Joe now has the ability to revert back to the factory configuration should he, for any reason, decide to do so.

Windows has Speedfan, Ubuntu? Zip, zero and nothing. This is a big drawback if I just want my PC to download some files overnight while I sleep in the same room.

Ubuntu 9.10 (or next LTS) should be a bugfix release
Written by papukaija the 10 Dec 08 at 14:52. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu has actually 48236 open bugs. This is too much. Ubuntu 9.10 (or next LTS) should be a bugfix release (or the bugfixes should have a high importance) so Ubuntu would be more stable.

sort utility can sort numbers with human-friendly sizes (i.e. du -h, df -h)

Written by vlovich the 2 Jan 09 at 08:58. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be nice if the sort utility could support sorting numeric strings that have a human-readable suffix (i.e. properly sort 4M, 5.5K as 5.5K, 4M instead of 4M, 5.5K that would result from the traditional numeric-string sort.

This would be really useful because it's possible to use the -h flag of du & dh and get an intuitive result when passing through sort.

For example:
df -h | sort -hk 2 prints all the system mounts sorted by size
df -h | sort -hk 3 prints all the system mounts sorted by most utilized
df -h | sort -hk 4 prints all the system mounts sorted by least utilized (most free space).

This is far more friendly output than would be obtained by having to use df -k | sort -n and more intuitive (and much easier to remember) than having to pipe through several text-processing utilities to try and get the human-friendly numbers sorted correctly.

Working patch is in the launchpad bug report.

Create a database for settings
Written by Frantique the 15 Dec 08 at 10:03. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Imagine a database where people can submit their settings for specific laptops where things are not working out of the box.
Other users who have the same configuration will get the settings automatically.

Let's take a specific example:
Sony VAIO laptops don't manage the sound out of the box, so I had to add to the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base the following line:
options snd-hda-intel model=vaio enable=1 index=0 position_fix=2

I had to play around a little bit with this, because nowhere I could find an accurate howto.

Now... If we could have an application which gets this setting with my laptop's ID, and loads it to a database on the Net, other people can get this line automatically to their laptop.

I hope it was clear what I want to say here... :)
