As Kubuntu already has terrific bluetooth support, I would like for bluetooth headsets to be available as i/o devices for music players and VOIP applications. A general option to route all sound through the headset would be great.

I like Rhythmbox a lot! I love the cover art retrieving functionality, but I think it would be perfect if Rhythmbox use the cover art in the local HD (inside the album folfer would be great).
Nothing important, but nice.
Thanks a lot!!

Hy,
at this moment is very hard to configure the audio settings, because there are several possibilities what you can choose:
alsa, pulse, oss, and the audio chipsets in my case NVIDIA CK 804 - IEC 958, Nvidia NVIDIA CK 804.
So in my case 5 possibilities to chose the right mode for audio settings.
But from this five possibility none of them are good:
- alsa: you can play more then 1 audio file in paralel, but you can not use dolby and dts, you can not change the audio volume from the audio or video players (I'm using optical connection between my computer and my amplifier)
- pulse: you can not run more audio files in parallel, you can not play dts, ad dolby, you can change the audio volume from the player
- oss dts and dolby is working but you can not play more audio files in parallel, and you can not change the voulme form the player
- NVIDIA ....IEC 958 i don't know what is for.
- NVIDIA .... i don't know what is for.
So actually we have a lot audio manager and all of them are just partialy usable for a general user for general PC using: game, music, movie, applications.
My suggestion is to make just one audio manager from five but this should be easy to configure, and should work easily in all situation!
(If you are not able to write the proper software for all chipset than lets implement the same situation as at the video cards: the chipset maker should provide the driver).
If you are voting with minus pls explain, because I do not understand why some people do not want to have just one strong audio manager instead of 5 which are good for nothing!

Add an easy way for Banshee/Rhythmbox users to contribute to the Radio directory: to get a more comprehensive and more diverse radio directory than say.. Itunes, we need to let users add their favorite radios URLs, to catogorize them and to send them via their Music Player to a database. They would be reviewed, and possibly included in the next version of the media players.
In general, the apps should gather as much user-contributed content as possible where relevant.

Risk to keeping common users: Online Television & Move Networks

I've been watching a few shows on the internet; abc.com, nbc.com, fox.com; and having to rely on my dual boot XP system to view them.
ABC and Fox switched last year from formats that were compatible with Linux to those that are not. I've been searching for work-arounds and have been mostly unsuccessful (many have tried Wine, ie4linux, etc). I've tried commenting to the media sites about supporting Linux (and have found many others that have done so too). I poked around a bit and uncovered some startling dangers.
The new system, by Move Networks, inc. Offers a better viewing experience over Flash due to some technology they have (see http://www.movenetworks.com/). The keys for the content providers using them is that the software identifies users quite deeply with the goal to distribute focused advertising. What information do they capture? They list some at their site and are probably expanding that with recent funding...
The interesting danger to Linux is that major "agreements" were by Microsoft last March and again this August. Some statements about using Silverlight and whatnot to more tightly bind the content distribution (to Windows).
Looks like some other big names are involved with the Move Networks venture besides Microsoft now: Cisco, AT&T, Comcast, and others.
A few articles.

It's extremelly annoying the lack of amd64 support from Adobe about Linux Flash plugin, as well the bugs provided from running the i386 Flash plugin on amd64 machines.
As well, the ammount of users of Flash plugin should justify Adobe opening the Flash player sources, and providing a more solid and accuraced compatibility with GNU/Linux.

Add fun effects to audio on the volume mixer

Normally, when you go into the volume control of Ubuntu, all you can control is the sensitivity of microphones and other capturing devices. You can also control how loud the audio comes from output devices. But wouldn't it be great if you could do fun effects to the audio in the mixer, too, like make all sounds made produce echo as though it was in a cave? Acer already does this with some of their computers with Windows Vista. That is my idea. This would make Ubuntu more entertaining.

image resizer when open copy/paste for email and other applications

Allow some sort of image resizer to pop up that easily downsizes the image. I am thinking primarily about making it more convenient to downsize images for email attachments, but this feature should be generic and not application-specific.
It will be aware of different image formats and options for resizing (e.g. JPEG compression, image dimensions, etc.). It will have a simple/"smart" mode that selects appropriate parameters for you and just "does it", as well as a more flexible option that lets you adjust compression, image size, etc. Future versions may become smarter, able to target specific images sizes, or via image analysis select settings that provide maximal compression with minimal visual artifacts, so images with more complex details may not compress as much as simpler images.
If possible, this feature may be aware of a set of user-definable categories. The user can configure different desired compression settings for various categories. For example, they may want to compress images more liberally when sending to their phone via bluetooth than with email, or perhaps the user may wish to compress images in email attachements less for some recipients or cases. This categories feature should not be distracting and confuse the basic function, however.
I would like this to work with all the common email programs: evolution. thunderbird, claws, etc. In addition, I would like to see it work with other apps such as Gnome, Thunar, Brasero and other CD burners, so you can easily downsize images when copying them around (e.g. to USB thumb drive, burn to CD, to email attachment, send to bluetooth, etc.).
I am not a GUI programming expert, but I guess this would probably be implemented in GTK/Qt dialogs and clipboard copy/paste functions.

Sound volume - sample sound

This is a simple one. When changing the volume slider there's no indication of the volume. This is a good thing IMO as you don't always want a loud *dong* when changing the volume. However, it would be handy to have a small button below the slider which plays a quick sample sound to test volume.
This would be handy when setting up a presentation and want to quickly test output volume. Or when playing with an external amp and need a quick test.
A similar button in the volume controls could be useful also.

Multiple CD Album ripping - continuous track numbers

Whilst media players such as Rhythmbox are able to cope with the disc number metadata (and play tracks in the correct order), other devices/programs such as MP3 players which use sorted filenames play all the track ones, then all the track twos, etc.
With albums with multiple CDs I would like the track number vaules for the subsequent CDs to not start again at '1' but continue. This functionality would only be enabled when the value in 'disc' is greater than one. Then the previous CD's ripped files could be looked at to find the track number needed to start on.

Fix sections of photographs using similar photos online

A research team from CMU came up with a way to repair photos by patching missing/dodgy sections with similar ones from other photos.
I propose we build it into our photo tools so that users are able to automatically fix their pictures in a natural looking way automatically. Granted they may end up with a few foreign trees in the photo, or the shoes might not match at the end, but users would not be able to determine the real photo.
Neither OSX nor windows seems to do this yet, but it has many practical applications. More information is available here:

Allow user to lock max volume on specific ports

We need a way to be able to lock a specific max volume on different sound card ports (possibly in the upcoming pulse audio volume control)
Many users have been concerned of accidentally putting the volume too high blasting their earphones and eardrums to bits.
Whilst there is no generic way of letting users set the max decibles allowed on the port, users could set their own on the individual ports, or on the master volume. It would also let users leave the maximum volume for their amplifier SPDIF port unlocked, whilst setting your analog jack (which you would use for headphones) locked quite low, so that if they maintain different sound output devices, they all continue to perform well.
Everyone wins, and no extra hardware is required. This is the only way of generically fixing the problem with current technology unfortunately. This idea is based off Natureflow's idea, of Preventing too loud sound

Reliable CD/VCD/DVD-Burner needed

I am really dissatisfied with many of the CD/DVD writing programs of Linux Operating system. The problem with them is their unpredictability while copying disks. A few of my blank CD/DVDs were spoiled when I tried to copy some videos I myself had created. And so I can certainly say that it was not a matter of copyright or anything like that. Moreover, there is a need for VCD/DVD making option using linux friendly formats like ogg video files since many of the VCD/DVD players do not support ogg directly. Other features like Menu and slide show creation are qualities that our burners should possess.

Face recognition for cheese (for smiling and blinking detection)

Cheese should have a face recognition feature that only takes a photo when:
1) Nobody is blinking
2) Everyone is smiling
The Samsung omnia smartphones (which are only 600mhz) already do this, and apparently it works quite well. Face recognition could then later be used in other libraries.
And this would make profile pictures and such closer to "one-touch". It also helps polish linux to the point it doesn't demand user for feedback to operate, instead it is able to identify in these cases when the photo is bad, and delay the photo until it is good.
