Easy DVD playback.
Written by arckeda the 30 Dec 08 at 02:52. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When people try to play a commercial DVD encrypted with CSS, they should get a notification saying something like the following:
"Due to the varying legal stats of libdvdcss, it has not been included in Ubuntu, you must download and install it."

If the user is in the US, they might also get this:

"The Digital Millennium Copyright Act prevents unlicensed decryption of CSS in most cases, however, it also provides exemptions for software interoperability, and in this case, libdvdcss is legal to use in the US."

Or perhaps something similar to the above? Anyway, I would like the user to have the option for easy installation of libdvdcss3, as well as being informed of the current laws.

Give Sound Juicer the same encoding options as Sound Converter
Written by Xero Xenith the 4 Jan 09 at 20:38. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Sound Juicer. New
Sound Juicer and Sound Converter are very similar apps, with one ripping CDs and the other converting sound files to other formats. Sound Converter gives users an easy way to choose, where they pick which format, then they get a nice guided way to choose the quality. However, Sound Juicer (the CD ripper) does not, and relies on profiles, which are very difficult to modify.

For example, the "CD quality, MP3" preset gives me 128kbps MP3s. Nowhere near CD quality, so I decided to try and change it. There's no easy GUI option; you have to change the command line parameters! All the help you are given is this:

audio/x-raw-int,rate=44100,channels=2 ! lame name=enc mode=0 vbr-quality=6 ! id3v2mux

I figured out you had to change the vbr-quality to around 2 to get what I wanted. Not intuitive at all. On the other hand, the SoundConverter interface was intuitive and easy.

I propose Sound Juicer switches to Sound Converter's format choosing layout.

Raise PulseAudio priority

Raise the priority for the PulseAudio process (lower the nice value), to prevent audio skips and dropouts during CPU load.

Eye of Gnome should allow renaming pictures
Written by nitrofurano the 30 Dec 08 at 16:45. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Gnome. New
When opening a picture from Eye of Gnome, specially when browsing pictures, we should be allowed to rename te picture we are browsing - i think picture viewers like XNView and AcdSee have this, and i think it's a feature not so hard to implement (but i'm not skilled enough in C language for helping it...)

Graphical Interface for Sending Output to a Projector
Written by IkimashoZ the 9 Dec 08 at 20:11. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There is help online for getting an Ubuntu laptop to send out to a projector, so it's definitely possible, but it would be nice if there was some graphical interface for this process. Also, most laptops use fn+f3 to switch between varying output methods. This could be easily integrated into Ubuntu and would go a long way to winning over academics, like myself.

Pulse audio graphical update
Written by micdhack the 22 Dec 08 at 00:35. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
While i believe that pulse player is much more functional that vista's mixer it has also the con of not being graphically good.

- I believe that it would be nice if for every application in volume control you could see the sound bar. Similar to vista's sound bar. While this is not functional i believe that adds an aesthetic to the mixer.
- For every application running at least for the ones that have an icon there should be visible near the application title. These adds to a better aesthetic and its much more practical to search visual what you want by comparing the icons and not reading the application titles
- My last idea is more like a function request. Im watching films sometimes that have very bad quality sound and low volume. While im having everything maxed it still isnt enough(i have a laptop). It would be nice if desibels could go higher than 0.

Some vista's sound mixer screenshots i found on images.google.com:
http://news.softpedia.com/images/news2/The-Windows-Vista-Volume-Mixer-3.png
http://cybernetnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/vista-volume-mixer.gif
http://www.shivaranjan.com/shivaupload/windowslivewriter/WindowsVistaHowtoContr olVolumeApplicatio_1303E/vista_volume_mixer.jpg

Remember we dont have to make it exactly like vista. We can make it ubuntu style. This screenshots provide just some basic guidelines on what this graphical improvement might be.

kaffeine (and other video players) should remember last position
Written by trylik the 13 Dec 08 at 14:37. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'm using rockbox - open source firmware, it has a video player, and every time I open a movie, it saves last seen point

for ex

I'm watching Big Buck Bunny, and I'm stopping player on 2:03. Next time i load the same file, player asks me if I want to start on last point

it somehow reminds me firefox sessions saver

it would be a small, but good extras

Ubuntu/Linux Digital Media Player.   forum
Written by Slug71 the 3 Jan 09 at 20:27. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I would absolutely love to have a Ubuntu/Linux Digital Media Player and i'm sure many others would too.
Microsoft have their crappy Zune and Apple have their Ipod and i figured if Ubuntu/Linux could have a share of that market it could be really good advertising for Ubuntu/Linux and also good financial support.

Update: Perhaps a device that ships with Ubuntu MID(kindly pointed out to me be Neon Lights from the Forum) or a modified version of it.

Turn on more options in mplayer by default
Written by Magnes the 29 Dec 08 at 13:37. Category: Multimedia. Related to: MPlayer Movie Player. New
Right know when you add vf=eq2,hue to the config file of mplayer the player will allow you to change brightness (very usefull for crappy videos), contrast, saturation and even hue of the video (keys 1,2,3,4 etc.). I didn't notice any negative impact on the mplayer so I think it should be turned on by default.
Right know when user installs mplayer from repository he may not know that this options even exist.

ALSA handling and ALSA upgrade process
Written by KlausSchulz the 10 Dec 08 at 09:59. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
My first proposal over here.

I am actively involved in the Linux/Ubuntu audio arena.

After years of being annoyed by the poor Linux sound support, I've written an upgrade script for a manual upgrading ALSA.
Focus is put - first of all - on the drivers of course, to get situation slightly improved. ( http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=962695 )

I regard ALSA to be Up2Date a critical successfactor for Ubuntu/Linux.

Nobody will use Linux if the soundcard doesn't work or just a limited number of features are supported.
Try to google "My headphone jack is not working" "No sound on my PC speakers" "My digital-out is not working". " I got scratchy sound" "I got heavy noise on the speakers" asf, asf. I am not the only one being trapped by ALSA, thus being forced to run a dual boot machine.

In case cards are supported at all, quite often normal users have to play with different codecs, model-ids to be introduced to the module options (docs to be found in ALSA sources tree), complex .asoundrc setups, asf.

There are 100s of threads just in the Ubuntu forums about
trouble with ALSA and workarounds to get them solved.

This is IMO unacceptable. (In case somebody really wants to make Linux/Ubuntu available to a wider community)

Things to be done:

1. Discuss, support or force Alsa to improve its quality related to

New icon for Vorbis.
Written by coder543 the 14 Dec 08 at 20:57. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Honestly, have you seen the Vorbis icon... Promoting open formats is good and all, but if you've seen the Vorbis icon you would not want to promote it either (in probability). This idea is very self-explanatory.

Insights on the files it contains videos

Give previews of video content in a folder, displaying video images on the cover of the folder, as in Windows XP. It would be nice to manage the many personal videos.

tool to edit geometry of VGA output por projectors
Written by trylik the 13 Dec 08 at 12:32. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
nowadays most of projector has auto correction of image, but it doesn't work every time correctly, and also when you project to the wall not 90 deg, it is not rectangular.

it would be really great if i could adjust it from ubuntu - it should be very easy to use, so user would be able to move only 4 corners in every direction, and also rotate any angle he wants

of course, by changing any of these parameters, output image size would be smaller - x server will put black background in a proper aeries.

i think it should be so hard to do - compiz or kwin can co anything with windows - bending, resizing etc

Compiz applied to sound
Written by semtido the 17 Dec 08 at 22:52. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Compiz. New
I guess this one may be a problem to implement but anyway...

It would be great if compiz effects also interacted with sound, ie when rotatting the cube the sound of the music playing should seem to come from the side on which the music player was located. Also, the other effects could also support sound effects (like closing windows effects, maximizing, etc etc).

Music player that displays waveforms
Written by surfsunadam the 8 Dec 08 at 12:55. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Totem Movie Player. New
I would love a music library/player like rhythmbox to display an audacity style waveform of the song I'm listening to.

Benefits:
1) Easy scrolling to listen to a specific section of a song
2) One can asses the quality of the mastering - overcompressed, clipped and over amplified music will become glaringly obvious
3) Raise awareness of the loudness war ruining the fidelity of many modern recordings.
4) You get an insight into the entire mastering process of the album

Implementation:
Right above or below the scroll bar.

Avoid horizontal scrollbar
Written by moose the 18 Dec 08 at 19:20. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Totem Movie Player. New
In this screenshot you can see what I mean by talking about horizontal scrollbars in Totem.

If no visual effect is used (as in my screenshot) Totem should automatically use the given space and Totem should not display this useless placeholder. A placeholder can be used ... but if there is a horizontal scrollbar the placeholder should disappear and this space should be used by the playlist.

If no sidebar is used you could even minimize Totem more

Those pictures should only visualize what I mean and Totem shouldn't look like this ... they are just made by GIMP and I think there could also be many improvements

Folder Organization While Importing to F-Spot
Written by guywithcable the 25 Dec 08 at 20:19. Category: Multimedia. Related to: F-Spot Photo Manager. New
It would be nice to have F-Spot import photos to the folder you want instead of placing them into the Photos folder by date. That way you could keep folders organized on your hard drive the way you like.
