Merge all sound tools into ONE
Written by Darvon the 2 Jul 08 at 11:39. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There are the usual sound options, there is alsamixer, there is pulseaudio, there are codecs for sound in specific programs etc.
It would be better to have ONE place to configure everything, which has to do with sound.

Ubuntu needs simple thumbnail based video editing.
Written by animaniac the 28 Jun 08 at 13:39. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Kino is seriously outdated and Avidemux is only good for a few simple tasks. Cinelerra and jahshaka are too complex.

Ubuntu needs a simple thumbnail based video editing solution that can work with a variety of formats (GStreamer).

In the age of YouTube and where everyone has a video camera the importance of this cannot be underestimated.

This has been suggested before in quite good detail, but only in a comment:

hey I really want to say the most important thing right now for a open video editor is that it has to be thumbnail based like the new imovie 08. This should be very easy to accomplish, many folks have been doing this for some time in some form or another; editing on compressed files and then applying the edits to the higher definition originals...

This means less processing, and no rendering until the final render out...

An open source video editor that offered a thumbnail workflow would blast away most of the competition...

Replace old sound GUI with new one with Pulse Audio features in mind
No information about this blueprint

Written by Yfrwlf the 7 Jun 08 at 04:27. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Pulse Audio is now in Hardy! The work is never over though and there are several remaining issues to be solved and enhancements to be made for 8.10. A new GUI is needed to replace the old one for audio control if the features of Pulse Audio are to be taken advantage of. It would be nice to see them accessible by default to raise the "coolness" factor as well as enhancing the usability of the current system. Currently, for example, there is no way to change Pulse Audio's default sound card through the existing GUI without installing extra packages, nor can you change ALSA's default sound card (you can only change the default for the sounds made in Gnome, but not for any other programs which use ALSA). These extra Pulse Audio controls should be merged with or replace the current system, or new ones should be made and merged with or replace the current system, or the current ones changed/enhanced. When other sound servers are selected, certain features could be grayed out if unavailable to keep everything sound system agnostic. This will also allow configuration of ALSA as well for those programs which still rely on it (and fix the above problem with ALSA as well).

Idea #2: There are still many programs that use ALSA, which is a remaining issue mentioned in the linked blueprint. If more programs were only made to be agnostic so that users can use whichever sound system they desire, that would be an ideal and much more permanent fix so that patching these programs later wouldn't be required. If some kind of standard is needed to help with this issue, the Ubuntu community could help take part in pushing for that standard "interface", and that would really help. It's sad when programs themselves have to be updated if a different sound server is desired, so it's a problem that should be fixed once and for all with a good, easy, standardized sound interface/language available for all programs to use if there isn't one in existence already. It's those kind of changes that will really make Ubuntu/Linux as a whole much more powerful and flexible and allow greater program adoption, competition, and use down the road. This, IMO, makes this idea more important than idea #1, or installing PA by default, or anything else on this subject, even though those are important too. :)

P.S., Brainstorm won't let me continue because it recognizes the Blueprint URL and won't allow an override, since this idea is a lot different. Overriding should be allowed, but for now I'm altering the URL.

make totem more feature rich, attractive, powerful, adva nce
Written by dragoninsane the 27 Jun 08 at 14:42. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Totem features required:
*improve playing videos.the skip the scene or seek to new position doesnt work
not with arrow keys nor with mouse.
*improve the interface, nice looking better than wmp 11 and mac os x video players there are lot of good looking applications in windows like
Powerdvd,Divx,Gom player(although its open source),vlc, real player, quick time, jet audio, zoom player etc over 100 and more importantly they all play even flv files, mkv files.even winamp plays videos
*-functionality like vlc but with better interface
*-equalizer support and plugins
*-easy support to install plugins,themes,visualilzations
There are very few players natively available to linux esp gnome.
for kde :kaffine, now dragon player ,kmplayer etc
but for gnome
buggy totem,xine age old
vlc works on all platforms but its interface isnt that good.i applaud linux for
list of audio players like amarok, exaile, song bird, banshee etc

Volume-manager should fade to set volume
Written by jalla2000 the 28 Jun 08 at 14:30. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Gnome. New
When i change the master volume with my keyboard's increase/decrease volume buttons i got only about 17 steps from no sound to full volume. That's fine. But the stepping is very hard and uncomfortable to my ears. What I would like to see is the volume manager fading between the volume steps. I suspect rhythmbox is doing this already. I'd like to see the volume manager displaying the set volume with an arrow or something and then showing a quick animation that fills the bar in about half a second or something depending on the amount of change in volume. This would not increase the amount of needed keypresses but would make a volume change sound much better. I'd like to see some simple adjustable preferences for the volume control as well (number of steps etc).

Add local radiostations to Rhythmbox upon install.
Written by animaniac the 1 Jul 08 at 23:00. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Most places have local internet radio stations (public and commercial free), there could be a community maintained database of urls for regional radio stations that get loaded to Rhythmbox when one installs Ubuntu, based on locale settings (or rhythmbox could just ask on first startup what country/town).

Case:
John installs Ubuntu for the first time, and without even having any music loaded he can listen to whatever is popular in his town/county/country, or even the news in his language.

------------
Edit:
Theres even a rather good list of national radiostations on:
http://www.radiotower.com/all-countries.html
Even though radiotower only links real streams on many of them, even though they do stream compatible formats directly from their websites.

This might be useful somehow if this idea would be implemented.

The list (having checked a few countries) seems very complete.

Support Integrated Media Management for GNOME
Written by babis79 the 30 Jun 08 at 10:19. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Gnome. New
Please support the Integrated Media Management Project
http://code.google.com/soc/2008/gnome/appinfo.html?csaid=15C2B5BC19A9276A

In my opinion, this is an really important project and if ubuntu/canonical can do some magic here to speed up the progress of developing, we could have some new interesting applications for the GNOME desktop.

Look at my idea http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/8195/. This could be a possible use case for such an media manager integration.

video editing program for ubuntu
Written by newhuntwat the 26 Jun 08 at 13:35. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
english:
video editing program.
I think it would be good ubuntu that has a video editing program (with transitions photographs and films)-style Pinacle.
the windows have their own agenda Windows Movie Maker and ubuntu also should have no?. with one simple and intuitive think that would be sufficient.

sorry for my bad english

Universal, combined sound volume and eq controll with extra
Written by oyster_head the 1 Jul 08 at 03:34. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I recently switched from microsoftc**k vista to ubuntu, and well, anything is better than m$.

Something i do miss however, and NEED, is an EQ!!!

I have a razer barracuda sound card, which i can't find drivers for anything but windows, and using the supplied software i cwas able to controll universal EQ and volume, audio inputs and audio outputs, including switching from analog to digital including optical.

To be able to use my home theater system to its full potential, i really need a universal eq additional to the...very limited volume control (really needs some upgrading), and some options to switch from optical to other forms of output etc.

This is really really important as no applications seem to have adequate eq's and a universal eq would make everything simpler, and make ubuntu even more competitive to the other inferior OS's.

Please make EQ's, and...make the world a better place, for you and for me, and the rest of hum...audiophiles around the world.

open a menu in any program and try to use hotkey like volume+/-, it will not work. It`s just a little usability improvement.

Build Flash editor Replacement which uses HTML/Javascript/SVG/AJAX
Written by Auzy the 1 Jul 08 at 08:42. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'd like to see an Adobe Flash-like editor, which creates output as a HTML file (using HTML,SVG,Javascript & AJAX) instead of a custom file format. This will allow the files to run on ANY web-standards compliant browser, without requiring external plugins for every single browser. Such files will just work (even on mobile devices)

Advantages & Disadvantages
The main advantage is that no plugins or virtual machine is required. Any standards compliant browser will support the file, and any OS which has a standards compliant browser will support it.

It would also be much more secure, because all files would run within the confines of the browser. Flash for instance bypasses cookie controls because it stores its cookies outside of the browser. This is exploited by companies to track users. And as long as the browser is secure, the files will be too.

And, the editor could even be implemented as a web application, so that users don't need to install a development tool. And since it uses basic javascript, extensions to the editor could be easily made (this isn't possible in flash/Gnash/whatever else).

The only disadvantages is that the files will run a bit slower for now until the next round of browsers with faster javascript execution. And we may need to wait for the next version of HTML for the additional multimedia capabilities.

Examples of Current SVG/HTML/Javascript Combos include:
Photos Example
Tetris Example
Interactive Slide Show

If there is enough enthusiasm to code such a project, I would be willing to help program.. This should definitely be taken up by someone though so that we no longer need flash.

Cross-platform Webcam backend
Written by Auzy the 10 Jun 08 at 02:58. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Its time for someone to make a proper Webcam library which works on multiple platforms, so that developers can make webcam-centric programs that are automatically cross platform.

Our problem at the moment is that developers must either code for Video4linux, or the windows API (so seperate code for both). By making a library that is cross platform, developers will be able to code applications with:
- Cross platform mic/sound(Phenon/Pulseaudio)
- Cross Platform Windows (QT/GTK)
- Cross Platform Webcam (Nothing available yet)

And this may make it possible to finally develop webcam programs where the code automatically works on linux, with no additional effort. So companies like skype could possibly maintain 1 code-base for linux, windows and OSX, which works on all 3 operating systems with only a few lines of code changed. It would help ensure that we would get the latest programs a few days later, rather then a year after.
