Optimize OpenOffice.org Default Settings

OpenOffice.org is quite sluggish with its default settings. Every time I install Ubuntu, one of the first things I do is change the OpenOffice.org settings.
I usually change the settings as follows:
MEMORY - 30 steps, 128MB, 20 objects, 20MB per object
JAVA - Do not use Java
VIEW - Open GL, optimized output, dithering, refresh during interaction and hardware acceleration all ticked.
Without the View settings changed, running old powerpoint presentations in slideshow mode literally brings a dual core processor to a halt.
I'm not sure that the default settings should be exactly as described above because I'm not sure what ramifications that might have for other computers, but it seems to be that there is a lot of room for improvement in performance.
Developer comments
Changing the memory settings would increase the minimum memory needed to
run OpenOffice.org by quite a bit, which would not be good for lower end
machines. OpenOffice.org uses Java for most functionality not deemed
'core functionality' so by disabling Java many parts of OpenOffice.org
would not work. Also, changing the view settings leads to problems with
older systems and video cards that have buggy drivers.
The fact that some PowerPoint presentations take large amounts of cpu
power without the view settings changed is probably a bug. Also, the
poster on Ubuntu Forums that had mentioned using those settings
corrected his problems later mentioned that the changes didn't actually
help on all documents. So there are probably some bugs that still need
to be corrected in OpenOffice.org regarding these issues. If you see
issues like that it would be very useful to report them on Launchpad and
include a sample document exhibiting the problem.

I love the fact that I can plug into my already-existing scanner and start scanning. What I don't like is the lack of OCR capability to convert text images to text data. From the support forums I understand that there are OCR possibilities out there on the internet, but for someone who is not a programmer, they are not usable at all.
(Also, for whatever reason, the XSane program is no longer working since my upgrade to Feisty Fawn.)

Open Office needs to come preloaded with the better dictionary and thesauras plus and easy graphical interface for adding the extensions that are available from Sun's site. This interface needs to be idiot proof or the Windows users will not move.

In the same way you're putting Firefox 3.0 Beta 5, you should integrate Open Office 3.0 Beta instead of the current version. I've tested it. It's stable and has many cool extra features.

Automatically disable the touchpad when you are typing by specifying a number of seconds the touchpad stays inactive after you hit a button on the keyboard. This is very useful on laptops where it is very easy to accidentily touch the touchpad while typeing.

Replace the awfull NWF by GTK. (like NeoOffice with Cocoa) NWF is often unstable and inconsitent. A clean GTK version will also run on multiple plattforms like OSX or Win32! In addition it might be more portable for mobile devices like OpenMoko based ones.

Fonts in OpenOffice are horrendously rendered and look thin and 'scratchy' (Times New Roman in Writer being a good example) and additionally there is no sub-pixel anti-aliasing even when the rest of my desktop is using it.
Some horizontal strokes such as on the small letter 'p' are actually invisible - there appears to be not enough weight in them and makes the document look like it has been photocopied too many times.
Currently this is not an application I would like to spend much of my day using (and thankfully I don't have to) - but if Ubuntu is being touted as suitable in an office environment, this could be a serious problem.
I am pushing for Ubuntu to be used in our company but this sort of thing does not help my case.

I know it sounds simple and totally below anyone's time to do, but could ubuntu include a menu option/print option to create a pdf of any readable file, picture, web page etc.It would greatly ease compatibility with other systems.
Developer comments
A "print to PDF" option is installed by default on all applications. Either there is an explicit menu entry (as in OpenOffice) or you will have to select the "CUPS/PDF" or "PDF" printer entry in the regular print box.

OpenOffice 3.0 by default in Intrepid 8.10

I think this would be great for everybody, because OpenOffice 3.0 has A LOT of improvements that will help people that uses this kind of program constantly to migrate from MS Office to OpenOffice.
Support for MS Office 2007 documents and PDF editing are two good examples.
I know that Intrepid will be released in 15 days, but I think there aren't going to be a lot of crazy bugs to be fixed in "only" 15 days by developers if this program gets upgraded in Ubuntu repositories!
Think about that and let's do this now, instead of waiting more six months (Ubuntu 9.04) just to get this great program by default... you know, if more good programs comes by default, more the newbies and veterans will like!
Developer comments
Unfortunately, since the final release of OpenOffice 3 was delayed, there was not enough testing time to include it by default in Intrepid.
OpenOffice 3.0.1, to be released on Dec. 2, is a bugfix only release and should prove to be much more stable than the current release. This release will be available on the backport repository.

title basically. We need to add this support. Apple already has it (but they sued or something) but we should still get it because lots of people are switching to Office Open XML (darn ms for using a name like ours for their cruddy formats) and we need to be able to use that or some people will not consider ubuntu as ahead in technology- they will consider it behind because of some silly office format.
Developer comments
As described in this feature list, OpenOffice 3 will have import filters for MS OpenXML files.
Unfortunately, due to a delay of the release of OpenOffice 3, it won't be the default version of Ubuntu 8.10.

I use evolution, however when i need to look at a calendar i have to use sunbird. This is because evolution is basically stagnent, and does not support modifying web calendars hosted outside of the local server. i know there are a few work arounds for getting it to work, but i would really love to have a simple calendar program built into gnome/ubuntu(default) which links between the desktop clock (evolution calendar display) and a web based calendar, which supports bi-direction changes and updates.
I don't like having to open sunbird each time i need to change an alarm.

Make Wine 1.0 available in Hardy (through hardy-updates). This makes it easier for some companies who depend on XP software (which already works well in wine) to make the transition to Ubuntu.
IMHO it would be nice to release wine 1.0 through hardy-updates so everyone who hasn't disabled hardy-updates will get it. The wine 1.0 branch will probably continue to receive important updates making it easier for Ubuntu to maintain.
According to Eric S. Raymond's "World Domination 201" Wine is very important for Linux to become successful on the desktop.
Why wine is so important :
http://www.winehq.org/site/why
http://catb.org/~esr/writings/world-domination/world-domination-201.html
Wine 1.0 will release on june 6th. Hardy will release on june 5th. This makes it impossible to include wine 1.0 in Hardy except through hardy-backports or hardy-updates.
More information :
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardyReleaseSchedule
http://wiki.winehq.org/WineReleasePlan
Developer comments
Wine 1.0 is released for Gutsy and Hardy through backports.
It will be available via update too soon on Hardy.

gtk applications need an advanced/unified printing dialogue

gtk applications especially openoffice, mozilla firefox, mozilla thunderbird, ...
need an advanced & unified printing dialog which is comparable to the ones offered by microsoft's windows' printing drivers
they at least should include support for several pages per sheet (4 pages on 1 paper; 2 pages on 1 paper, duplex, etc etc)
apps like evince already support it but it's definitely missing on openoffice & firefox (where it obviously is needed the most)
a good example for offered printing options is kpdf
sorry if that functionality is already planned for the next upcoming versions of the mentioned apps
thanks ! =)

One thing that surprised me once I was testing the alpha 2 of Ubuntu 9.04, was that it included OpenOffice.org 2.4 - What?!?! It's an alpha! it should be bleeding edge and include the latest software! (correction: yeah, alpha is not about bleeding edge software, it's about bleeding edge OS)
Even sister (daughter?) distros like Super Ubuntu and so already include it!
I really hope we get OO.org 3 in the final version!

Evince, the default PDF handler should be given some extra PDF features like basic commenting options (highlighting, underlining etc).
I have always felt, Windows users are most impressed if boasted about being able to comment/handle/edit PDF files for free natively ;)
For e.g. I really like OpenOffice feature to directly export to PDF.
Our demand - Make evince stronger in terms of its PDF handling abilities.

Remove Evolution from regular installation

I don't use Evolution and like the majority of people (especially 'normal' users) have no use for it at all. Yet it comes installed by default and even has one of only a few icons on the taskbar. I tried to uninstall it with 'aptitude uninstall evolutin' or something similar and it would have uninstalled loads of other stuff as well (if I remember right).
Either remove it completely from a default install (i.e. allow people who want it to add it on add/remove software) or make it easier to remove.
