Per-process bandwidth usage in System Monitor

I would like to be able to enable an additional field in System Monitor's Processes tab called e.g. "Network bandwidth", which show me how much network bandwidth is being used by each process. Download and upload bandwidths separately, if possible.
If it helps, searching I found "Which app is using bandwidth" question at launchpad:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/30582
There it is said that the data in question can be retrieved by a tool called atop, but also it is said that requires kernel patching to do that.

Intelligent integration of Network Manager with applications

Ubuntu applications that use the network could use the status of Network Manager to provide more appropriate messages and behaviours. For example, when not connected to the network, instead of having Thunderbird tell you
"Error connecting to ***** server".
You could get
"You are not connected to the internet"
That could also save some time because the mail client should simply not even attempt to check for new mail when there are no network connections. The same general principle could apply to any browser.
Another example: If you start Firefox while the network connection is getting established, it could wait for it instead of giving you a "Page not found" screen.
Even synaptics doesn't seem to know when you are connected to the internet and gives you an error message. The list of examples could include audio players, IMs, apt-get, etc.
I am sure other people can think of more interesting examples that I could add to this idea.

Export & import network settings as file

It would be nice if there was a way to store the network settings on a memory stick (or on a network share), and make it so that they may be loaded onto any computer.
This would make it much easier for IT departments, university help desks and network administrators who want an easy way to set up peoples computers. The settings could even cover wireless and VPN settings, or even much more complex networks, and have a way to log the Mac address being set up (so that a list of Mac addresses and corresponding names could easily be generated, and added to the Mac filtering list).

Either Fix or Warn about the 2 GB Limit on Mailboxes with Evolution

I switched my mom over to Ubuntu a couple months ago and I have already had to rescue her email 2 times. The problem is when a folder in Evolution surpasses 2 GB, Evolution can't access it anymore. Evolution allows this without any warning and then that folder stops working without any information. The end user ends up lost and doesn't know how to recover the 2+ GB of email that is now inaccessible. There is a program called archivemail in the universe repository that will let a user archive mail stored in MBOX format. I've had to use this to recover my mom's email.
Evolution should warn the user to archive their mail before it goes past the 2 GB limit. An even more user friendly approach would be to automatically archive email folders for the user. Of course, Evolution could also be fixed to allow more than 2 GB in a folder.
Please fix this as it drives my mother and ultimately me nuts every time it happens. I can't imagine how many other people have run into this and don't know how to recover from it.

Currently in Network Manager, if there are two wireless networks with the same name, only one can be displayed. This needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

Before stopping to seed my torrents, I usually check the number of seeders.
Currently, the user must open Detail dialog > Peers Tab.
What about adding this information on main panel along to ratio ?

Include Mail Notification in Jaunty by default

Mail Notification monitors your mailboxes for new mail. When new mail arrives, Mail Notification alerts you by displaying an icon in the notification area. Moreover, a mail summary an be displayed in the icon tooltip, a sound can be played, and notifications containing useful action buttons can be popped up.
One of the goals of Jaunty is the blurring of web services and desktop applications. This is an easy chance to integrate email into the desktop, no matter if it is webbased or not. Mail notifier supports everything from yahoo, gmail and hotmail to evolution and thunderbird, blurring the line between webmail and desktop email applications.

ability to disable auto dial on startup

When I configure a dialup modem connection through network manager it will be connected automatically on start up and there is no option to disable this feature.
currently the only solution to disable auto dial on start up is to uncheck "Enable this connection" option that will clear all your current configuration options. in this case you have to reconfigure your connection each time you want to connect.
It would be better if there was an option to disable auto dial on startup.

GNOME PPP for NetworkManager

I use a dialup modem with Gnome PPP and connect to office VPN using vpnc. If I connect to any internet connection using NetworkManager, I can use the vpnc plugin for network manager to login to office networ. but if I connect using Gnome PPP NetworkManager's vpnc plugin is disabled. I have to use vpnc from command line. I suggest a Gnome PPP plugin for NetworkManager (I know no way to connect to internet using the dialup using NetworkManager because Gnome PPP allows me to provide all the modem init and other parameters to be able to connect, but NetworkManager does not) so that I can connect to internet using NetworkManager and connect to vpn using vpnc plugin for NetworkManager. We have all the good gui developed but we can't use them together as they don't work together.

Birthday reminder for Pidgin

It would be pretty useful if Pidgin and other included instant messangers had a birthday notification feature as other messangers have.
ICQ, MSN and so forth show you if it's your friends birthday and so you don't miss it.
Pidgin should have the same function as former Windows users are used to this.

Maybe pidgin could translate the words we receive to our language, and maybe translate the words we send to another language, just by setting filters.
A plug in can do that i think (using on line services of course)
The filters should allow to be set for each contact on the list of contacts.

When Samba updated last time, it deleted my network configuration settings found in smb.conf. This sort of thing is terrifying for a newbie, especially from an AUTOMATED update.
Solution: make sure that configuration files are preserved.

Download/installation queue

Sometimes someone wants to install a program or download a file (that they know the exact url of) but don't have an internet connection. It would be useful for Ubuntu to see that there the computer is not attached to a network, and instead of bringing up an error, to add it to a download queue so it could be downloaded the next time the computer is connected to the internet. Or, probably better, to pop up a notification saying there are files in the download queue and ask if it can download them now once there is internet available.
As for installing packages in the download queue, maybe use the authorization granted when it's added to the download queue or ask for authorization right when it wants to install it after download.
This could be useful for systems that are not always connected to the internet or have limited bandwith (maybe add things to be downloaded on a certain date or time?).

SSH tunneling option in Vinagre
|
|
Written by firefeather the 11 Sep 08 at 12:42. Category: Internet & Networking.
Related to: Vinagre Remote Desktop Viewer.
New
|
The only reason I don't use Vinagre (a GREAT vnc client if you ask me) is due to the fact that it doesn't do SSH tunneling like "vncviewer -via". Vinagre's bookmarking system would make it simple for me to connect to a vnc server through an SSH tunnel quickly without fussing with the command line typing the server's name every time.
This request for enhancement is found on GNOME's Bugzilla at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=478036 .

I use terminal server client to connect to windows computers in my network.
I have used remote desktop in windows also. windows rdc provides facility of copying/pasting text to or from network computer computer.
I think if ubuntu terminal server client provides the facility to copy/paste the text to and from desktop to remote computer then it will be really useful.
