Let applications specify right-click options for their window list entry.
Written by Warbo the 5 Sep 08 at 01:36. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The window list (otherwise known as the "task bar") provides a list of the application windows currently open or minimised, and right clicking on these enties allows the user to choose various things to do to them.

However, as it stands these options are limited to window management, like "close", "maximise", "move", etc. If an application wants to use arbitrary options which are always accessible in the panel, they have to make a notification area icon. For instance many music players create such an icon so that play, next, stop, etc. buttons are always available. These icons take up space in the notification area and are not notifications at all. Often, clicking on them produces a minimise/restore effect exactly like clicking on a window list entry does. To me this seems completely redundant.

Allowing applications to add arbitrary entries (such as play, pause, etc.) to the right-click menu of their window list entry would allow the notification area icon to be gotten rid of, as all of the functionality they allow would be available.

Since many applications use a notification area icon due to its cross-desktop standardisation implementing this would have to be done through freedesktop.org to create a cross-desktop, cross-platform, language-agnostic specification.

This idea doesn't touch upon the exact method of doing this, or the display (for example adding the options above window management ones, below, in a sub-menu, etc. this would probably be left to each window list/window manager implementation)

A "donut" application "circle"
Written by Domestiqules the 5 Sep 08 at 00:27. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Live CD. New
I would like to have a "application doughnut". This would be like an extra program organizer. You wouldn't take away the traditional program organizer though. Just as an extra thing on the side of the start bar you should put the ubuntu doughnut. If you were to click on this it would bring up a full size doughnut on your monitor. You could use the scroll wheel on your mouse to turn the doughnut. Inside each section will be an icon. You could click on the icon to bring up the program. Also you should be able to put only the programs you choose onto the doughnut.

Use Ubuntu logo on Compiz Fusion's splash with default config for desktop effec
Written by retj the 4 Sep 08 at 16:59. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Compiz. New
Would be nice that, when activating desktop effects, compiz' splash comes with ''Ubuntu: linux for human beings'', instead of ''compiz fusion''. also would be nice if this splash was shown while desktop is loading so when it fades away your computer is ready to use.

automatic backrounds with how to help
Written by savantelite the 3 Sep 08 at 21:24. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There are so much nice documentation for Ubuntu that I don't get to see unless I search for it.

Why not have an option to automatically switch my background to a nice how to or something new feature in Ubuntu?

Under desktop background in the appearance preferences I could check a box for I would like Ubuntu to change my background with the "enter what ever here"

Then give me a widget that asks Like, Dislike, or give me more info.

Abstract GUI/framework filesystem system access
Written by yesterday the 3 Sep 08 at 16:58. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Kubuntu. New
This idea is fairly major as it requires some change to basic way frameworks such as GTK, QT4, Tcl etc. work. The idea that the graphical framework used and the filesystem GUI are coupled is completely outdated. Why can't a GTK2 app use the QT4 filesystem dialogue box when saving say a document in KDE4?

I'm proposing that there be a GUI filesystem access abstraction layer for all frameworks to use. The underlying GUI filesystem access is managed by the default desktop in use. Any application requiring GUI access to the filesystem would use the desktop default settings.

The major benefit of this idea is a more consistent visual experience for the user. Different filesystem dialogues for different frameworks makes for an inconsistent and unprofessional look and feel when using various applications from different frameworks. Additionally, different frameworks have different settings/favourites/bookmarks/etc that are not replicated. By having a default defined by the desktop in use, we get much closer to seamless framework interoperability.

File and Folder name look and backup flexibility
Written by amarendra the 3 Sep 08 at 10:38. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In Gnome, the name of files and folders when, too large can't be auto-shortened. I mean the full name is shown in the windows that makes the folder look and structure a PIE (pin in the eye).
Include a backup program like HUBack, that is really flexible. More than one folder can be selected for backup at once. And the auto backup option that pops up in SBackup and Backuppc etc on every file change.. seems to be real buggy.. There's should be options to change this. However HUBackup is real good, just give it more power.

System Notification with Compiz
Written by retj the 3 Sep 08 at 05:23. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Compiz. New
Simple, would be nice to have an option to add notifications, i don't personally like a mute system, and i hate system bell. Would be nice to have a plugin that allows the user to have sound for important notifications like errors and stuff.

Compiz Globe Plugin.
Written by crhylove the 2 Sep 08 at 17:39. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Compiz. New
I would like a compiz plugin that made the desktop a compiz cube, transparent, with a 3d real time textured globe in the center, focused on the city/timezone of the local setup.

The globe should be lit where the sun is shining, and dark where there is no sun, but with lights indicating where cities are, and also real time weather, based on online satellite information.

The globe would also serve as a clock displaying the time in any number of ways as defined by the user.

Eventually the globe should have real time lighting, and we should include a sun and moon model, though either might be off screen at times.

Add a new theme (e.eg.NewWave) ti Intrepid Alpha
Written by Matthias the 2 Sep 08 at 15:16. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Hello!
Please add a new theme, maybe the really good and most active theme "NewWave", that includes an GDM/Icon/GTK2/Metacity/Emerald Theme (http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/NewWave ) to the Intrepid Alpha! We really need a new design and it would be a good idea to simply add this new theme and check the user results.

(I dont want to see a heading like "Ubuntu 8.10 will not contain a new design")

But why not!!
Written by alexbellisle202 the 2 Sep 08 at 03:58. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
For some time I use at the same time as Ubuntu, Windows XP with the theme of Windows vista Inspirat2 therefore with the rocketdoc.

I vote if ubuntu could have a theme as Mac'os with a menu of its kind but in a totally different meaning. ((ask graphic)).

I love Windows XP
I like Zenwalk
BUT I PREFER TOTALLY Ubuntu

Graphical duel monitor application
Written by savantelite the 2 Sep 08 at 03:44. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
Every desktop computer shopper should be considering duel monitors. The amount of time you can save buy having twice the desktop space for programs is hard to not consider.

anyways, a nice graphical tool under the system tab. Also a application manager that designates witch apps go in witch screen.

animate radar in weather applet
Written by oddchild the 2 Sep 08 at 01:43. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
It would be real handy to be able to see the radar show the last 5 or more images, so that it is easier to see where the clouds / storms are heading.

colour schemes on Gnome
Written by nitrofurano the 1 Sep 08 at 22:21. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
Recently i got amazed on finally being able to use colour schemes on Gnome, just like used to be possible on Irix and KDE.

The final goal would be if somehow Gnome-Colour-Chooser could be implemented inside Appearance Preferences

Some examples of how the .gnomecc Gnome colour schemes could be applied:

Smart Button
Written by HermanChess the 1 Sep 08 at 02:11. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Sometimes it's not very effective or nice to have a start menu and a show desktop button, especially if you only have 1 panel. How about creating a start button that when clicked once it shows the menu, and when double clicked or clicked for a bit longer it shows the desktop?

Compiz configuration file
Written by joerobles the 31 Aug 08 at 20:17. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
I like to research how each compiz desktop effect is working and sometimes i want to undo or redo something but i can't, i have to write in a paper all customizations and reapply. Compiz may have a file where all configurations could be saved on.Then we can share and select like profiles with buddies or internet. Thanks

Right Click Radial Menu
Written by jgaba24 the 31 Aug 08 at 20:13. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I do not know how difficult this would be...But it has always seemed like a good feature for those who like their desktop clean

The idea is : Right click anywhere on the desktop it would bring up a circular menu around the cursor with icons of your most used apps progs etc.. the closest example I can think of would be neverwinter nights (right click brings up a menu for issuing commands) it seems that applying this would be a good idea for quickly launching programs or apps that the user most often uses

Best example I could find: http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2007/225/radial504_embed.jpg

Dynamic eyefriendly color schema tool / generator
Written by daddo the 31 Aug 08 at 14:03. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Please make a wizard based tool for creating dynamical color schemas for ubuntu/linux. It should work like that: i choose one primary color (or i can let it calculate from my desktop background picture). The picking of the primary color could be with some slider or with some color picker.
After that, that tool generates a color schema _reckon with rules of color theory_.
The result should be an _eyefriendly, with ideal color compatibility and with optimal contrast for human eyes_. That tool _should eliminate_ bad color schemas, but make easier to make new cute ones.

Color schemas generator in web: http://www.colr.org
About color theory: http://www.worqx.com/color/

Existence of that kind of tool could be the answer for all these "Ubuntu is too brown" / "make ubuntu more [any other color than brown]" ideas, even when the original theme stays like it is.

Sorry my bad english, it's not my native language.
