When a moderator marks idea as a duplicate, the duplicate one should be closed.
Or, it could be done in a way that voting on the duplicate increments the votes for the original idea.

Why is this needed?
Because presently, a duplicate shows a "duplicate" in rd written in small fonts. Sometimes users do not notice that and keep voting on the duplicate itself.

Oftentimes, a user wants to create a 5-second mockup in ASCII. For example, look at the comments for this idea. Coder543 wanted to make a quick mockup that would have looked like this (underscores added):
________/
_______/_
______/__
__I.E_/_Firefox
____/____
etc.

Instead he was left with a horribly mangled comment that was just a column of /'s. Please preserve whitespace for comments in brainstorm.

Edit: Also, please don't have the idea description font be monospaced when editing. The end result is normal isn't, so why can't we see what we'll get?

Logging in should not take the user away from the Brainstorm page she was viewing. Instead of a link for logging in, every Web page on the Brainstorm Web site should have two text boxes with grey text inside saying "User name" and "Password". When each text box is focused, the text should disappear. After the user enters her user name and password, she presses Enter to log in, and the page now shows her user name as usual. If Javascript is not enabled in the user's Web browser, then the labels should appear next to the text boxes.

If all this cannot be done because it is too much programming, then at least the user should be automatically taken back to the page she was viewing before clicking on the "Log in" link.

[30] Permalink for comments on Brainstorm

Here is in nutshell (if you want to avoid reading the whole thing)
Permalinks would be html links on comment boxes that, when followed would straight away open the specific comment on the idea page. This makes discussing about a specific comment easier.

DETAILS:

>> What are permalinks?
A URL pointing to a specific comment, opening which would directly take you to the comment.

----------------

>> Why is it needed?
Consider idea http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/103/
Now suppose, you are discussing this idea on some IRC channel and you are refering to user 2cents comment in that idea.
Since this idea has a lot of comments, the person reading it has to literally scan the whole idea or use his/her browser's search tools.
If you use a permalink instead, you can simply give the permalink address that would straight away take the visitor to the comment.

-------------------

>> Some examples?

I will site examples from Ubuntu websites itself.

1. Launchpad has permalink.
Now consider this huge bug page: https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1

Now this bug has so many comments. Now say you are discussing about Colin Watson's comment he made on 2007-11-23, you can simply find it, click on the (permalink) link and share this link instead: https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1/comments/521
This would directly show the comment you want to talk about.

2. Ubuntu Forums has permalink
Rather, vBulletin has permalink ;)

For example in this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=998330
You can select out a single comment by clicking on the post number, for example: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6285812&postcount=10

In this way, almost all forum software/discussion boards that support comments from users have permalinks.

--------------

>> How can it be done?

Static anchors (html label names?) for each comment box. Each comment has a comment number, so it will not be a problem.

For example, in the above example of idea #103, the comment ID for 2cents is 30960.
So if a html/bookmark link is created for each comment box, we can have a (permalink) link on comments that would point to, say: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/103#30960 or something.

That would help up to discuss about any specific comment anywhere, without having to making statements like "Scroll down almost to bottom of the page and find XYZ's comment there"

I love the Ideas being worked upon page, because it's a great way of getting a very early look into what we can expect in april. Now that Intrepid has been released 2 months ago, the Ideas being worked upon page shows a lot of ideas being worked upon, but there's no way of seeing what is considered for implementation in 9.04.

Seeing as how it's going to be april reasonably soon, Ubuntu 9.04 is being developed, and the first alpha was released almost a month ago, I don't understand why 9.04 isn't on that page. Please add and populate it with implementation of ideas we can expect.

The same pretty much applies to the Implemented ideas page. Surely if an alpha has been released, new features were added and it's not unlikely some of them stem from ideas on Brainstorm.

I miss ability to mark discussions to be followed (subscribe to it or something like that) so that i am notified every time someone comments on them. I would like to have a notification icon appear somewhere where i can always see it while i am on brainstorm. That icon would appear every time there is a new comment i might be interested in. Clicking on that icon would bring me to a list of those recently updated discussions. It does sound a lot like my mail client. So it is an existing pattern.

Currently available Bookmarks functionality is not really handy for this kind of thing because :
1. it's hidden 2 clicks away
2. it displays the contents of the issues, so one needs to scroll too much sometimes over multiple pages in order to see if there is "new comment" icon next to it. What's the point to show contents when i already marked it - i already know what it's about.

We will suggest it.
Your idea is good, but can evolve.
We will improve your idea, and work on it.

It would be very good this action. People can understand better what the developers think. It would make a better cheer to all, because his ideas would have marked by developers.

Have you even gone to vote to an idea only to find out there are tons of comments saying "why wont you try this app is the same thing or hey its already done look at this website and download this app". Well my idea is to implement a section of the comments to have a place to upload or place the website of a recommended app and make it vote to find out which is the one that is the best by popular vote so you don't have to look from millions of comments to find out any alternative to the idea that is supposedly already been done. This idea can be also be implemented to various website like Ubuntuforums, Ubuntu site and brain storm. It will improve information sharing.
I think that is important to create a summary in brainstorm, not a top ten.

Until now, we only put and vote ideas, but we don't improve them.

They are ideas that need more than a vote, need to be improve by the users and give more importance to the comments (now: critical comments, in future 2 kinds= critical comments and improve comments). Why? comments normally to back or attack your idea, but is strange that people try to improve your idea (they aren't a special place to add ideas to improve your principal idea).

Example:
Ubuntu need to me more beautiful, at less like Mac OS X.

And the users:
Yep! we need cristal buttons, configuration more easy in this and this point, change the way to change the wallpaper, etc.
