Ubuntu needs to go green. Powertop, Lesswatts and other tools have finally hit the Linux scene to pave the way for better power management. It needs to be said, "if you want your battery to last longest, or have your energy bill be the lowest, you better use Ubuntu Linux."

Push for partnerships with other hardware vendors
Written by Veejay the 28 Feb 08 at 14:41. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
Given the success (as far as I know) of your Dell partnership, please do everything possible to seek alliances with other vendors, as it will reinforce the idea that Ubuntu is a viable alternative to other operating systems and will provide better hardware support for current Ubuntu users.

Dell is offering new models based on Ubuntu (recently the XPS M1330 in a few countries), proof that the business model makes sense.

Thank you for ubuntu !
Written by tioum the 29 Feb 08 at 15:49. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
While requesting features to the open source community which consist mainly of free workers, we may often forget to say how much we like Ubuntu and look like costumers requesting.

So you can say thank you to the thousands of developers and users who gave their time by voting for this article :)

Allow users to log into Ubuntu Forums and other Ubuntu sites (such as ubuntu brainstorm) using their OpenID.

Developer comments
Work is being done along to make that possible (though I don't know an ETA).
First step: the Fridge (http://fridge.ubuntu.com ) is now using Launchpad authentification via OpenID.

Create a "works with Ubuntu" logo for hardware   forum
Written by marvo the 3 Mar 08 at 12:39. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
Whenever users plan to buy new hardware for their ubuntu machines, they first have to search the web to find informations about kernel/driver support or incompatibility issues.

It would be really helpful if a sticker on the outside of the box of a scanner/printer/usb-dvb-tuner/mp3(ogg)-player/digicam/... simply said "works with ubuntu" or "designed for GNU/Linux" to guarantee that the product runs "out of the box" with Ubuntu or other Linux distributions.

Make the System default to Metric Units
Written by ll the 5 Mar 08 at 15:06. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Most of the planet uses the Metric System. So why does the system default to imperial units? Make A4 the default paper size for printing, only two countries don't use it. Most people don't know what inches are so cm or mm should be the default.

All the packages in the software repository should include a URL hyperlink to the official website of the software.

So when you read about the software, you can click on the link to get to the official homepage, for more information.

Developer comments
The latest packaging rule explicitly asking to add the homepage URL of the software to the package has been there for a while now. A good proportion of the packages should now have their homepage URL in their description.

Better release notes for Ubuntu 8.04
Written by Ubuwu the 24 Mar 08 at 14:59. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
Ubuntu’s goal is to be the most popular desktop OS for humans. But new versions of Ubuntu, like most Linux distros, are still marketed towards Linux geeks. They’re concerned with technology, trumpeting version numbers and drowning out the actual things you can do with their software.

We’re picking on Ubuntu specifically because it has higher goals than most distros - it’s Linux for human beings, not Linux for hackers. Unfortunately, the release announcements have forgotten what humans care primarily about: themselves.

http://blog.gobanquet.com/index.php/why-ubuntu-804-needs-better-marketing/

That website seems to be down, but here is the cached version on google:

install 7zip with default
Written by vinutux the 6 Mar 08 at 11:43. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
7-Zip is open source software. Source code is under the GNU LGPL license. it is nice to install it default.

1. Install 7zip with other copression methodes like zip, tar, gzip

2. It automatically integrated with file-roller. So no need any other gui program or user don't want to know complex comand lines for compressing their data in 7zip.

Password asking when you move/copy files to protected folder
Written by gio91ber the 10 Apr 08 at 17:24. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In Mac OS X when you try to copy/move a file in a protected folder appears a pop-up that asks you to insert admin password.

In Ubuntu the same thing become very difficult, especilly copying multiple files: you have to access to the terminal and write a command. This could be really stressing for a new user.

Could you implement the same function seen on Mac?

I've been playing around with Apple Mac OS X Leopard and, although the system didn't impress me that much, I loved one feature that I'd really like to see in Ubuntu.
It´s call Quick Look, and allows you to view the contents of a file without open its default application.
This is great when you have a folder with different types of files (JPG, MPG, DOC) and you want see the content of the files quickly without open many applications (Eog, Totem, OpenOffice Writer in this case)
You can look how this work in Mac OS X on here, here and here.

Attract New Developers to Ubuntu and Open Source
Written by aantn the 13 Mar 08 at 13:28. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu is built on the philosophy that every user should be part of the community. Many users help out in various ways, however very few start programming because of the traditional difficulties.

1) Many people just don't know where to begin. Create a developer resource website and a "Beginner Developer Package" as mentioned in idea #4354.
The website should mostly contain articles aimed at new developers. It can link to external resources (e.g. the KDE and GNOME developer websites) for more advanced information.

Both the website and the developer package should be maintained by the general Linux community. Although the project will not be distro specific, The Ubuntu community will benefit greatly by sponsoring the project.

2) Bring back Canonical Code Bounties to motivate new developers.
Integrate them with community bounties as mentioned in idea 1295.

3) Create a Ubuntu Design Rewards website. (Idea 2961.)
Most developers coding for OS X and Windows have never even heard of Ubuntu. Mac OS X in particular has a costant stream of neat new apps. We need to capture their attention and bring them to Linux by way of contests and prizes.

In particular, Canonical should focus on attracting high school and university students. Google has been sucessful in bringing students to open source by using prizes and monetary incentives (GSoC and GHOP). We need to be more welcoming and do the same.

Better "computer" place (nautilus)
Written by francois the 4 Mar 08 at 18:27. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When clicking on the "computer" place in nautilus (Poste de travail in french)
We actually see a mess of icons, not at all ordered.
It would be GREAT to have subdivisions like "Hard Drives", "CD/DVD Drives" "Removable Devices" (or "external storage devices" or so) and "Network Places" or even more, and this with useful details
-For the hard drives and external storage devices: the filesystem of the different partitions that are displayed and a disk usage bar showing used and free space below the icon, possibility of setting the label of the partition by renaming the icon, etc.
-For cd/dvd drives, it could show if the tray is empty or not, if the disk is blank or used, with or without multisession, etc.
-For network places, maybe it could show samba shares on other computers or workgroups, and provide a tool for easily mounting shared folders with smbfs or so

User directories on ubuntu are easily a mess at the moment. They need more standardisation and more sense to remain clean. If you go to terminal/bash you may discover that your directory looks something like:

/home/auzy/Documents
/home/auzy/.Azureus (Hidden)
/home/auzy/.gnome2 (Hidden)
/home/auzy/Desktop
/home/auzy/.bashrc2 (Hidden)
/home/auzy/readme.rtf
/home/auzy/.Trash (Hidden)
/home/auzy/iffy.rtf
/home/auzy/delete me.rtf
/home/auzy/argggggg.c
/home/auzy/fgdhgfdhd.txt
/home/auzy/Music
/home/auzy/.ooffice (Hidden)
/home/auzy/friendsassignment.c
/home/auzy/friendsassignmentCopy.c
etc.

While you may note that anything with . is hidden normally, what if someone wants to delete the settings for a program? They need to manually unhide it, and sort through the dozens of directories in the home directory to find it. The problems with this is that:

a) Its messy, and certainly not a clean solution
b) Users cannot easily access their settings.
c) Everyones home directory is normally trashed with hundreds of other files, making it difficult to navigate.

Wine-doors is a great program to works alongside with Wine, with scripts to help in the installation of windows programs, I think it would be very usefull if it were included in the repositories...

Tell Mozilla to count all the Firefox 3 downloads from repository
Written by unimatrix the 30 May 08 at 13:00. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
When Firefox 3 is released, make sure it is available to Ubuntu on the same day, so the updates from the Ubuntu repository can be counted for the *Guinness world record* in most downloads in 24 hours.
And most importantly, talk to Mozilla about relaying your Firefox 3 repository download data to them.
More info here: http://www.spreadfirefox.com/en-US/worldrecord

Let's help open source achieve another great victory!

RE to developer: You would have counted downloads, not users...

This wasn't doable, there's no real accurate way to count Ubuntu users.

"About me" utility should be integrated with pidgin, evolution, etc
Written by cicoandcico the 28 Feb 08 at 20:37. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The "About me" utility provided with gnome should be integrated with Pidgin and Evolution. The avatar set there should work as a "global" avatar. The utility should be able to manage the main E-mail address, IM accounts, signatures and everything that is related to the user.

I know, maybe time's not ready for such a pervasive control, but we actually have a lot of identities: let's start thinking about an easy way to rule them all.
