Written by kumailht the 19 Dec 08 at 18:43. Not an idea
At times I want to pause the download so I can use the download speed for some other purpose.

I think this would be a very handy feature.

Thanks

Solution #2: Resume after shut down
Written by thipv the 7 Jun 10 at 10:53.
Sometimes, for some reasons, we must quickly shut down the pc or the laptop to do other important things. So you are in a trouble if you have an installation process running of a large quantity/sized packages that will take a long time to finish on those moments.

Add/Remove Applications is ugly and confusing

Right now Add/Remove Applications should be the first place a new user looks when they want to install a program. It's a step in the right direction but could be better. Unfortunately the large number of available programs (yay for variety though!) makes it seem daunting if you don't know what you're looking for. Choice is great, but only if you know what you want to choose.

Thanks for the ideas. Ubuntu 9.10 introduces the Ubuntu Software Center as a more attractive, less confusing replacement for Add/Remove Applications. In future versions we will introduce subcategories and smarter handling of system tools. — Matthew Paul Thomas (mpt)

Selected solution (#1): Trim programs, redesign
Written by tharris the 18 Jan 09 at 19:40.
1)Remove things like Update Manager and Synaptic Package Manager from the list of System Tools, since they are installed by default and we don't really want people removing them. If someone is hell bent on removing that sort of thing they ought to at least know how to use Synaptic or apt-get.

2) Related to above: remove things that aren't applications! I want to add/remove applications. Not codecs and interpreters. Python is currently listed as the most popular application! What the hell? These things get pulled in as and when they are needed, they don't need to be listed separately.

3)Redesign to be prettier. appnr.com is prettier than what we have now but still not perfect. Love the ability to see screenshots/videos though.
-Start by removing the "Show:" dropdown. If I don't want to install closed source apps, then why did I enable that repo?
-More categories would help in making the individual lists shorter

Show off new programs in the repositories

Every release lots of new programs get added to the repositories. A lot of these go unnoticed to most users. Please make a webpage that shows off all new programs that are added, either when they are added in the development release or all at once at release time. This should include screenshots, a short description/review and an apturl link to easily install the program.

A basic version of this could even be produced by an automated program. A more advanced version including reviews would require more effort.

Keep track of application usage
Written by Frantique the 29 Jan 09 at 11:02. New
It is very nice that Ubuntu is shipping alot of useful applications by default, but some of them I don't use at all.
I was wondering how often and when I've used last time the Tomboy for example... Ok, but how can I check this? Let's extend Add/Remove applications!

Solution #1: Extend Add/Remove applications
Written by Frantique the 29 Jan 09 at 11:02.
This application will give also the following informations:

App. name, Usage frequency (never, low, average, high, perhaps number), Last used date and time.

As managing solution will provide:
- Remove the package which provides the app
- Find and install alternative for the given app (for ex. instead of Eye of Gnome suggest GThumb (IT IS JUST AN EXAMPLE!))

Note:
I think that in this way we could help the new users to get more familiar with Ubuntu.

Solution #2: Add last installed and add-ons
Written by winerflo the 29 Jan 09 at 21:10.
Don't change so much this software that needs to stay very simple to use.

Just:

Add a line "last installed" or "more used" and use it as a default page at the startup.
Having "all the softwares" classified alphabeticaly at the startup is irrelevant.

Add a button "more softwares" at the bottom for power-users with the add-ons sorted by applications (firefox, Ooo, Pidgin...)

Here is a mock-up of my idea : http://winnnerflo.free.fr/bordel/mock-up.png

Include screenshots in Add/Remove programs via screenshots.debian.net

There is a newly launched website that shows screenshots of programs packaged in Debian.
http://screenshots.debian.net

Note it says:
Michael Vogt has added support into synaptic.

I hope to see it included in Jaunty!

But since most newbies use Add/Remove programs it would be useful to include the screenshot support there as well.

Jaunty aims at merging the web and the desktop, it should include automatic downloads of screenshots from this site in the Add/Remove application, so that users can see what an application looks like before they decide whether to install it or not.

Remove outdated and obsolete software from add/remove
Written by dima.shmidt the 16 Nov 08 at 10:04. New
For ex.:

http://pulseaudio.org/wiki/AboutPulseAudio#RelatedSoftware
On this page you can read that

"The following obsolete or out-of-date UI tools have been Developed for PulseAudio as well:
* PulseAudio Manager
* PulseAudio Device Chooser".

So why we still have them in repo?
We need to find the way to have no such programs...

auto font installer
Written by ssam the 6 Nov 08 at 18:06. New
In the spirit of the codec installer; when you open a document that uses a font you dont have installed, a dialog pops up an helps you install a package that contains that font (or a similar font)

I was trying to find the version numbers of some new programs I wanted to install, but I couldn't find them anywhere in the add/remove programs manager. They are, of course, listed in synaptic and other places, but I think this is an important piece of information to include in the add/remove programs place also.
