suggest program to open unknown files
Written by ways the 11 Mar 09 at 13:44. Related project: Nautilus. New
when clicking an unknown file, like hello.doc (bad example), nautilus should look up file definitions to help guiding the user. the response could be "this is a microsoft word file. it can be opened with open office writer. "

Solution #1: a script/extention in nautilus to look up file-ending/magic number
Written by ways the 11 Mar 09 at 13:44.
(optionally) look up file on the net or in signature db to figure out what to open file with. inform which application made the file, and open source or proprietary application to open it. if user allows it, install automatically. kind of like we do with codecs.

periferals on desktop
Written by ways the 5 Feb 09 at 10:46. Related project: Nautilus. New
if i have a cd in my drive, a bluetooth device or a camera connected, it is displayed on the desktop. this should be extended to more periferals. if i have a webcam or a printer connected, it should be displayed on my desktop. and i should be able to print by dropping a document on the printer. take a photo by clicking the webcam.

and if we want to take this further, if i drop the webcam icon on my printer, it should take a photo, and print it. possibly with a preview window appearing. same could be used with speakers, microphone, mouse/keyboard. but too much will just be a mess.

Solution #3: Same as #1 but optional
Written by Daerun the 5 Feb 09 at 18:40.
In fact, some people dislike device icons to appear on their desktop, so, although it is a great idea to have all those perifereals to be shown on the desktop, make it somehow easily configurable to make as #1 says, but optional.

Solution #4: Use places nautilus sidebar
Written by Lachu the 7 Feb 09 at 19:31.
We can show all of these in right nautilus pane. We can also click on printer to see printing queue(hard to implement?).

transmission keeps laptop from sleeping
Written by ways the 8 Jan 09 at 10:57. Related project: Transmission. Not an idea
transmission bittorrent client keeps pc from sleeping when downloading. i have some trouble with how this is done.

now:
- no sleep, no hibernate, even if you ask for it. problem with this is that people close their laptops and throw them in their backpacks without waiting to see if they successfully go to sleep.

wanted:
- keep pc from sleep/hibernate (timed sleep) except when lid is closed (user action)

Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #17118
Written by ways the 8 Jan 09 at 10:57.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #17118 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!
